A violent confrontation in the occupied West Bank on Friday has left four Palestinians and one Israeli dead, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order a military crackdown. The incident occurred near the village of Tell, a flashpoint area where Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents have frequently clashed.
The Palestinian health ministry confirmed the deaths of four Palestinians and injuries to four others. Israel's Magen David Adom emergency service reported the death of an Israeli man. The exact sequence of events remains disputed, but local media accounts suggest that Israeli settlers from the nearby outpost of Havat Gilad entered Tell and were met by Palestinian residents.
The Palestinian News Agency WAFA reported that the Israeli group "attacked the eastern part of the village" and set fire to a shop, two homes, and agricultural land. In contrast, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the Israelis were hiking in the area and that a Palestinian resident stole a weapon from a security officer who arrived at the scene, opening fire on the group. Video footage circulating on social media shows armed men moving toward a group of Palestinians before one is disarmed and gunshots erupt. The IDF said its forces killed the individual who allegedly took the weapon.
Netanyahu's Response and Settlement Expansion
In a statement following the clash, Netanyahu announced he had directed the IDF to take "firm measures against terrorism." His orders include demolishing the home of the Palestinian who allegedly carried out the attack, conducting "vigorous operations in villages that serve as centres of terrorism," and reinforcing military presence throughout Judea and Samaria—the Israeli terms for the West Bank. Crucially, Netanyahu also instructed the IDF to "accelerate the legalisation of existing farms and the establishment of new ones," a move that critics say will further entrench Israeli settlement activity in the occupied territory.
The West Bank has been under Israeli occupation since 1967 and has seen a surge in violence since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023. According to a report from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, approximately 737,000 Israeli settlers now live in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Israeli settlements are considered illegal under international law, a position consistently upheld by the European Union and most member states.
The EU has taken a firmer stance on settler violence in recent months. In May, the bloc imposed new sanctions on Israeli settlers responsible for attacks on Palestinians, while also sanctioning leading Hamas figures. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated at the time: "It was high time we move from deadlock to delivery. Extremisms and violence carry consequences."
The latest escalation comes amid broader regional tensions. NATO recently vowed to defend Bulgaria after Iran threatened the country over the presence of US military aircraft, highlighting the interconnected security challenges facing Europe.
