Romanian air forces intercepted and destroyed an unidentified drone over the country's airspace on Friday, marking the latest in a series of aerial incursions along the Black Sea coast. The operation, confirmed by the Ministry of Defence, involved a Romanian F-16 fighter jet firing an air-to-air missile over an uninhabited area near the village of Padina, northeast of Bucharest.
President Nicușor Dan stated on social media that the incident occurred around 11:00 local time and that an investigation has been launched. He noted that the area was uninhabited, allowing the pilot to engage the target without risk to civilians.
Details of the Interception
According to the Ministry of Defence, the drone was first detected by radar at approximately 09:40 on Friday morning over the Black Sea. It then moved westward, passing near the port town of Sulina and heading toward the city of Buzău. The ministry reported that a jet from the 86th air base at Fetești in eastern Romania was tasked with the air policing mission and successfully engaged the drone with an air-to-air missile.
In a coordinated response, two Italian air force Eurofighter Typhoon jets operating from the Mihail Kogălniceanu air base were scrambled alongside two Romanian F-16s to monitor the situation. The Italian aircraft are part of NATO's enhanced air policing mission in the region.
The incident follows a pattern of drone incursions into Romanian airspace. In May, a Russian drone carrying explosives crashed in the city of Galați, causing a fire on the roof of a residential apartment block and injuring two people. The following month, a Ukrainian sea drone exploded in the port of Constanța. The Ukrainian navy stated at the time that the drone had veered off course due to Russian electronic warfare interference.
Romania, a NATO member since 2004, shares a border with Ukraine and has seen increased military activity along its eastern frontier since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. The country has bolstered its air defenses and hosts allied forces, including Italian and American units, as part of the alliance's deterrence posture.
The use of an F-16 to shoot down a drone over Romanian territory underscores the growing challenge of unmanned aerial vehicles in modern conflict. Drones have been used extensively by both Russia and Ukraine in the war, often straying into neighboring countries' airspace. The incident also highlights the importance of NATO's integrated air defense systems, which rely on rapid coordination among member states.
