France's elite aerobatic team, the Patrouille de France, staged a flypast over New York City on Thursday, trailing red, white, and blue smoke across the Manhattan skyline. The display marked the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, a milestone that also resonates across the Atlantic given France's role as a key ally during the American Revolutionary War.

Nine Alpha Jets, painted in the colours of the French tricolour, flew in formation over the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson River, and lower Manhattan. The Patrouille de France, based at the Salon-de-Provence air base in southern France, is one of the world's oldest military aerobatic teams, having performed continuously since 1953.

A Symbol of Enduring Ties

The flypast was not merely a ceremonial gesture. It underscored the deep military and diplomatic bonds between Paris and Washington, which have been tested in recent years by disputes over trade and defence policy. The choice of New York, a city with a large French expatriate community and a historic gateway for European immigrants, added symbolic weight.

French Ambassador to the United States, Philippe Étienne, described the event as "a tribute to the friendship that has united our two nations for two and a half centuries." He noted that the anniversary coincides with ongoing discussions about transatlantic security, including NATO's eastern flank and the war in Ukraine.

The Patrouille de France's appearance in New York follows a series of high-profile international engagements. In 2023, the team performed over Rome for Vespa's 80th anniversary, and it regularly participates in events across Europe and the Middle East. The Alpha Jet, a Franco-German light attack and trainer aircraft, has been the team's mount since 1981.

The flypast also comes as France grapples with domestic challenges, including a looming heatwave that has put pressure on hospitals and emergency services. The Patrouille de France's pilots, many of whom are drawn from the French Air and Space Force, train year-round at their base in Provence, a region that has itself faced wildfires exacerbated by extreme temperatures.

The US anniversary celebrations in New York were modest compared to the 1976 bicentennial, but the French participation was widely noted. Local media reported that the flypast drew crowds along the waterfront, with many spectators waving both American and French flags.

For European observers, the event serves as a reminder of the continent's enduring cultural and political influence in North America. France remains the United States' oldest ally, and the Patrouille de France's visit reinforces a narrative of shared history that extends beyond the current geopolitical tensions.

The team is scheduled to return to France later this week, where it will prepare for its annual Bastille Day flypast over Paris on July 14. That event, which traditionally includes a parade on the Champs-Élysées, will be watched closely as a barometer of national unity and military readiness.
