The long-running speculation over who will next play James Bond appears to be entering its final phase. According to multiple industry reports, Amazon MGM Studios is holding final auditions for the role over the coming days, with an official announcement expected before the end of the year.

While the studio has remained tight-lipped, several entertainment outlets have published conflicting shortlists. Jordan Ruimy of World of Reel claims the race has narrowed to three names: Jacob Elordi, Jack Lowden, and an undisclosed third actor. Ruimy suggests the announcement could land between late October and early November.

Jeff Sneider at The InSneider reports that Elordi and Lowden have both completed screen tests. However, The Hollywood Reporter has contradicted this, stating that neither Elordi nor Jack O'Connell—who was reportedly Danny Boyle's preferred choice—will be testing. Meanwhile, Deadline sources indicate that four test offers have been issued to Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, and Josh O'Connor, with the fourth name still unknown. Jack Barton remains a speculative possibility.

A wildcard in the mix

Josh O'Connor, known for his roles in Challengers and Wake Up Dead Man (where he appeared alongside former Bond Daniel Craig), is an unexpected contender. His inclusion suggests the producers may be looking for a more unconventional interpretation of the character, one that moves away from the traditional suave archetype.

Despite the conflicting reports, Jack Lowden appears to be the common denominator. The 36-year-old Scottish actor, best known for his role as River Cartwright in the Apple TV+ series Slow Horses, has been repeatedly cited as a frontrunner. His filmography includes Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, Mary Queen of Scots (2018), and Benediction (2021). He is also set to play Mr Darcy in Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

Lowden's credentials are strong: he has the spy thriller pedigree, the charisma, and a pre-existing rapport with the franchise's casting director. He is also married to Saoirse Ronan, who has expressed interest in playing a Bond villain—a detail that has not gone unnoticed by fans.

The recent finale of Slow Horses has only fueled speculation, with its cliffhanger ending leaving viewers convinced that Lowden is being groomed for the role.

Producer Amy Pascal, who is overseeing Bond 26, told reporters in August that the end of the year is a realistic timeframe for the announcement. "We are being really, really methodical," she said. "Having worked with Barbara Broccoli at the studio, I mean, Daniel Craig is a hard act to follow. And it's got to be something really different that is stirring, exciting and different."

The next Bond film will be written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. It marks the first installment since Amazon took full creative control from longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson—a transition that has reshaped the franchise's future.

As the clock ticks down, the question remains: will the next 007 be a familiar face or a surprising choice? For now, fans across Europe and beyond will have to wait for the official word from London.
