Romania's national railway operator, CFR Călători, has revived its seasonal international "România" service, offering daily direct trains from Bucharest to three key destinations in Bulgaria and Turkey. The routes, which began on 12 and 13 June, will operate until mid-October, providing a comfortable and affordable option for summer travellers across the region.

The relaunch connects Romania's capital with Sofia, Varna on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, and Istanbul's Halkalı station. The Bucharest–Varna service started on 12 June, followed a day later by trains to Sofia and Istanbul. All three routes will run until 12 October, with the Varna train ending one day earlier on 11 October for outbound departures.

This initiative is part of a broader European trend toward reviving international rail connections, as passengers increasingly seek alternatives to short-haul flights and sleeper services regain popularity. The trains are also accessible to Interrail pass holders, further encouraging cross-border travel within the continent.

Journey Details and Pricing

The Bucharest–Varna train departs Gara de Nord at 10:46 and arrives in Varna at 19:56, taking approximately 9 hours and 10 minutes. The return service leaves Varna at 09:30 and reaches Bucharest at 16:56. One-way second-class tickets start at €27.

For the Bucharest–Sofia route, passengers depart at 10:46 and arrive at 20:41, a journey of about 9 hours and 55 minutes. The return train leaves Sofia at 07:00 and arrives in Bucharest at 16:56. Fares begin at €33.60 one way.

The overnight service to Istanbul Halkalı departs Bucharest at 10:46 and arrives the following morning at 09:56, taking roughly 23 hours and 10 minutes. The return journey leaves Istanbul at 20:00 and reaches Bucharest at 16:56 the next day. A berth in a four-person couchette compartment starts at €57.80 one way.

Tickets can be booked up to 90 days in advance through CFR Călători's website, at railway stations, or at ticket offices offering international sales. The operator emphasizes that these routes are designed to offer a comfortable and affordable travel experience, particularly for summer holidays in Bulgaria and Turkey.

The revival of these direct connections comes as European rail networks increasingly compete with budget airlines. Similar services have been reintroduced or expanded in other parts of the continent, reflecting a shift toward more sustainable and scenic travel options. For travellers from Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey, these trains provide a practical link between major cities and coastal destinations.

While the seasonal service is limited to the summer months, its success could influence future expansions. CFR Călători has not announced plans for year-round operations, but the growing demand for international rail travel suggests potential for longer-term commitments.
