For many long-haul travellers from Europe, a layover often means hours spent in transit lounges, duty-free shops, and sterile corridors. Yet a growing number of airlines now offer structured stopover programmes that allow passengers to spend a day or more in a hub city without increasing the ticket price. These initiatives are designed to encourage tourism and give flyers a genuine reason to step out of the airport.

From the cobbled streets of Porto to the futuristic skyline of Doha, here are some of the most compelling stopover options for European passengers.

TAP Air Portugal: Up to Ten Days in Lisbon or Porto

Portugal’s flag carrier, TAP Air Portugal, offers one of the most generous stopover windows in the industry. Passengers flying via Lisbon or Porto can stay in either city for up to ten days at no extra charge. The programme also includes a 25% discount on domestic flights to destinations such as Faro, Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Funchal, and Porto Santo in the Azores. Discounts on hotels, car rentals, activities, and restaurants sweeten the deal. TAP’s onward network is particularly strong for travellers heading to Brazil—with over two dozen cities served—as well as Canada, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, the United States, and several African destinations including Ghana, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Iberia: Explore Madrid with a Free Transport Card

Spain’s Iberia runs a stopover programme called Stopover Hola Madrid, allowing up to ten days in the Spanish capital. Participants receive a free two-day public transport card, plus discounts on hotels, tours, and restaurants. Iberia’s extensive Latin American network covers Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Uruguay, alongside routes across the US and Canada. For European travellers connecting to the Americas, Madrid becomes a natural and culturally rich pause.

Icelandair: A Week in the Land of Fire and Ice

Icelandair’s stopover programme is ideal for those flying between Europe and North America. Passengers can stay in Iceland for up to seven days, with suggested itineraries for 24, 48, or 72 hours that highlight waterfalls, mountains, and the famous Blue Lagoon. From Keflavík International Airport, onward flights connect to Canadian cities like Toronto, Halifax, and Vancouver, as well as US destinations such as Boston, Nashville, and Seattle. Icelandair also serves four airports in Greenland, including Nuuk and Ilulissat, making this a unique gateway to the Arctic.

Qatar Airways: Discounted Luxury in Doha

Qatar Airways offers one of the most affordable stopover programmes for those seeking comfort. Passengers can book heavily discounted rates on four- and five-star hotels for up to four nights, with prices starting at €24 per night for a standard four-star stay and rising to €140 for a luxury five-star experience. Participating hotels offer 24-hour check-in and check-out, eliminating the usual afternoon wait. From Doha, travellers can continue to African cities like Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi; Asian hubs such as China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Maldives; or Australian destinations including Sydney and Melbourne.

Etihad Airways: Free Two-Night Stay in Abu Dhabi

Etihad Airways provides a free two-night hotel stay in Abu Dhabi for transit passengers. The package includes a Stopover Pass offering a 15% discount on attractions and theme parks, plus a free local SIM card with 10GB of data. Etihad’s network covers popular spots like the Seychelles, the Maldives, Johannesburg, Sri Lanka, Tokyo, Bali, and Melbourne. For European travellers, this is a chance to explore the Louvre Abu Dhabi or the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque without extra accommodation costs.

Turkish Airlines: Free Hotel Stays for Business and Economy

Turkish Airlines offers a free one-night stay in a four-star hotel for economy passengers, while business class travellers can enjoy up to two nights in a five-star or boutique hotel. The carrier holds the Guinness World Record for serving the most countries, so onward options are vast. Popular routes from Istanbul include African cities like Cape Town, Kilimanjaro, Lagos, and Lusaka; Asian destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, and Kuala Lumpur; and American hubs like Bogotá, Denver, São Paulo, and Santiago.

These programmes are not just about saving money—they transform a layover into a genuine travel experience. For European passengers, they offer a practical way to add a second city to a trip without extra airfare, and often with significant discounts on accommodation and activities. As airlines continue to expand their networks—such as with new routes for autumn and winter 2026—these stopover deals become even more attractive for savvy travellers.
