Finnair has grounded its Helsinki–Dubai route for the entire upcoming winter season, extending a suspension that began after the outbreak of a wider regional conflict in late February. The Finnish flag carrier announced on Tuesday that services to the United Arab Emirates will remain halted from 25 October 2026 until 27 March 2027, citing persistent security concerns in the Middle East.
“The security situation in the Middle East has remained unstable, with no clear signs of improvement,” the airline said in a statement. It added that affected passengers would be contacted directly and offered rebooking or refund options.
Extended disruption from regional conflict
The decision prolongs a disruption that started after the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on 28 February, triggering a broader regional confrontation. Finnair initially suspended all Dubai flights from 28 February to 29 March, and simultaneously halted flights through the airspace of Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Israel. That airspace ban remains in place, forcing the airline to reroute its Asian services.
The carrier also suspended its Helsinki–Doha route in February. Those flights have not resumed, and in July Finnair confirmed that the Qatar route would remain suspended throughout the coming winter season for commercial reasons, separate from the security concerns affecting Dubai.
Finnair said earlier this year that the direct impact of the Middle East conflict on its overall traffic had remained limited, although the disruption to major regional aviation hubs increased demand for some of its routes to Asia. The airline has been able to redirect some traffic via alternative hubs, but the prolonged closure of the Dubai route underscores the persistent volatility in the region.
The suspension comes as European carriers continue to grapple with the knock-on effects of the conflict. Rising energy costs and shifting travel patterns have added pressure on airlines operating in the region. Meanwhile, the deployment of a new US carrier group to the Middle East suggests that the security situation is unlikely to stabilise soon.
For travellers, the cancellation means that direct connections between Helsinki and Dubai will be unavailable for the entire winter season, a period when many Europeans typically head to the Gulf for warmer weather. Finnair has not indicated whether it will resume the route in the summer of 2027, saying only that it will continue to monitor the situation.
The move also highlights the broader challenges facing European airlines in the region. While some carriers have resumed flights to Israel and other destinations, others remain cautious. The leaked emails about US–Iran deportation flights have added to the diplomatic tensions, complicating the operating environment for international carriers.
Finnair’s decision is a reminder that the conflict’s impact on European aviation extends beyond the immediate war zones. As the winter season approaches, passengers are advised to check the status of their flights and consider alternative routes. The airline has promised to provide updates as the situation evolves.
