In late 2025, a series of images purporting to show pop star Dua Lipa celebrating her wedding to actor Callum Turner in Palermo, Sicily, spread rapidly across platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. The photos depicted Lipa dancing with guests, posing with celebrities, and even eating spaghetti straight from a pot. But none of them were real.

The images were generated using artificial intelligence by Italian digital artist Rick Dick, who creates satirical and artistic content inspired by celebrities and fashion. He initially shared the pictures with the hashtag #ai, but they soon escaped his control, racking up millions of views and convincing many viewers they were genuine.

“What made me laugh most was that some people took the images as real, even though several of them were intentionally quite absurd and clearly meant as a joke,” Dick told The Cube, Euronews' fact-checking team. He noted that the real problem emerged after his work was reposted: “On my profile, they are clearly presented as AI-generated content, but when they are shared elsewhere, my logo and attribution are often removed, and the images are sometimes presented as if they were genuine photographs.”

Media and Public Fooled

Several digital outlets in India and South Africa confused the AI-generated images for real photographs of Lipa and Turner dancing at a welcome party in Palermo. Italian radio station R101 also posted the images on Instagram before deleting them. The incident echoes a similar case earlier this year, when actress Zendaya revealed that even people in her personal life believed AI-generated images showing her marrying Tom Holland were genuine.

The viral spread of these images underscores a broader challenge across Europe: distinguishing authentic content from AI fabrications. As AI-generated child sexual abuse material surges across Europe, the technology’s potential for harm is becoming increasingly clear. In this case, the deception was relatively benign, but it highlights how easily manipulated visual media can mislead even newsrooms.

Dick said his intention was never to deceive. “They are meant as light-hearted and playful caricatures inspired by a highly talked-about private event that attracted enormous attention online,” he explained. Yet the removal of his logo and the lack of context when the images were shared elsewhere turned a joke into a misinformation vector.

Palermo’s Real Wedding Controversy

The actual wedding of Dua Lipa and Callum Turner in Palermo has itself generated significant attention and debate. Some locals welcomed the arrival of international guests, including Charli XCX and Donatella Versace, while others raised concerns about disruption linked to the three-day event. The collective Apro Palermo, which campaigns against overtourism, put up posters across the city reading “Palermo Is Not for Rent,” highlighting the impact of large-scale events on local communities.

The wedding has also driven a surge in travel searches for Sicily, as Dua Lipa and Charli XCX weddings drive surge in Sicily travel searches. This phenomenon reflects a broader trend where celebrity events shape tourism patterns across Europe, often exacerbating tensions between economic benefits and local quality of life.

The AI-generated images add another layer to the story, illustrating how digital manipulation can intersect with real-world events. For European audiences, the incident serves as a reminder to verify visual content, especially when it appears too absurd—or too perfect—to be true.
