As the days shorten and a crispness returns to the air, autumn is the season when many of us crave warmth and comfort. For travellers, that often means seeking out cities that feel particularly snug—places with winding lanes, historic cafés, and canals framed by golden leaves. A new ranking, based on Reddit discussions, has now identified the continent's coziest urban escapes for autumn 2026, and the results offer a mix of the expected and the surprising.

The study, conducted by the UK-based holiday home letting agency Big House Experience, analysed Reddit conversations about cities in continental Europe (excluding the UK) and ranked them by the number of upvotes received. The outcome is a list that celebrates both classic winter warmers and some destinations more commonly associated with summer sun.

Bruges: the fairytale favourite

Topping the ranking is Bruges, the Belgian city that seems almost designed for a cosy autumn break. With its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and picturesque canals, it's little wonder that Bruges accumulated more than 15,000 upvotes across relevant Reddit threads. The city is famous for its historic buildings, chocolate shops, and quaint cafés—perfect for ducking into when the weather turns. A wander through its old town feels like stepping back in time, and a hot chocolate in a traditional establishment is the ideal way to warm up.

Close behind is Amsterdam, which earned 14,477 upvotes. The Dutch capital offers a different but equally appealing kind of coziness: historic canal houses, independent coffee shops, and tree-lined waterways that blaze with red and orange in autumn. While Amsterdam is a year-round destination, the chillier months bring a particular charm, with hearty Dutch dishes on menus and the irresistible appeal of poffertjes—those fluffy miniature pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar.

Prague and Kraków take the next two spots, with 11,098 and 10,117 upvotes respectively. Both Central European cities are renowned for their historic architecture and atmospheric old towns, where visitors can easily find a warm corner to rest after a day of exploration. Prague's winding streets and gothic spires are especially evocative in autumn, while Kraków's market square and hidden courtyards offer a similarly inviting backdrop.

Sunny surprises: Athens and Lisbon

In fifth place is Athens, a city that might not immediately spring to mind when thinking of coziness. Yet the Greek capital received 9,243 upvotes, proving that a cosy escape doesn't have to mean cold. Athens offers sun-drenched streets, traditional tavernas, and tucked-away cafés, all set against a backdrop of ancient history. The autumn months bring mild temperatures and a lively atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for those who prefer their snugness with a side of sunshine.

Lisbon follows closely, with 3,243 upvotes. Portugal's capital is another famously sunny destination that makes the list, thanks to its tiled streets, historic trams, and pastel-coloured buildings. Neighbourhood cafés and cosy wine bars abound, and the mild autumn climate means you can enjoy the city's charm without the chill that settles over much of Europe. For travellers who want to avoid the cold but still feel that seasonal warmth, both Athens and Lisbon offer a perfect compromise.

Scandinavian hygge and Alpine charm

Seventh place goes to Copenhagen, which earned 2,850 upvotes. The Danish capital is synonymous with hygge—the concept of creating a warm, comfortable, and inviting atmosphere—and it's easy to find that feeling throughout the city. Whether it's a candlelit café, a cozy bookshop, or a stroll along the harbour, Copenhagen embodies the art of making autumn feel special.

Salzburg and Utrecht round out the top nine, with 2,397 and 1,040 upvotes respectively. Salzburg, in Austria, pairs crisp mountain air with traditional coffee houses, offering a distinctly Alpine take on coziness. Utrecht, in the Netherlands, provides a quieter alternative to Amsterdam, with leafy canals, historic streets, and independent cafés that make it a hidden gem for autumn travellers.

For those planning an autumn getaway, this ranking offers a diverse range of options—from the classic charm of Bruges to the sunny warmth of Athens.
