A recent study suggests that regular engagement with arts and culture may slow ageing. This week's cultural offerings across Europe provide ample opportunity to test that theory, from exhibitions probing pop fandoms and masculinity to new films and television series.

Exhibitions

Pop Culture Devotion at Somerset House, London

From 21 May to 19 August 2026, Somerset House in London presents an exhibition exploring how pop culture fandoms have become a secular form of devotion. As traditional religious adherence declines, fans channel their passion into collecting memorabilia, creating fan edits on TikTok, and maintaining 'Stan' accounts on Instagram. The show delves into this world of hyperfixation, where celebrities and fictional characters are elevated to contemporary saints, highlighting the shared elements of obsession, connection, and creativity.

Questioning Masculinity at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam

Until 2 August 2026, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam hosts an exhibition that confronts contemporary masculinity. In an era marked by online misogyny and the so-called manosphere—recently examined in a Louis Theroux documentary—the museum uses innovative art to contrast aggressive masculine ideals with underlying insecurities. The exhibition questions what it means to be a man and explores the diverse forms gender identity can take.

Film and Television

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu

On 22 May, European cinemas will screen the latest Star Wars film, set five years after Return of the Jedi. It follows bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu (Baby Yoda) as they assist the New Republic against Imperial warlords. The original series ended in 2023 and remains a Disney+ hit, blending action with the charm of a Jedi Grand Master in training. As Yoda said, 'The greatest teacher, failure is.'

Rivals on Disney+

Now streaming on Disney+, Rivals adapts Jilly Cooper's 1988 novel into a steamy, campy drama set in the 1980s. The plot revolves around a feud between former Olympian and Tory politician Rupert Campbell-Black and TV mogul played by David Tennant, as they vie for control of a television empire. Expect illicit affairs, shoulder-padded costumes, and escalating drama. For fans of animated series, Rick and Morty returns for a ninth season on Adult Swim from 24 May, with a wider release on HBO Max on 31 August.

Music

Bleachers: Everyone for Ten Minutes

On 22 May, Jack Antonoff's band Bleachers releases their sixth studio album, Everyone for Ten Minutes. Known for high-energy anthems influenced by retro rock, the album focuses on personal growth, connection, and optimism—a timely message.
