Greek airspace experienced its highest ever daily traffic volume on Saturday 18 July 2026, as air traffic controllers managed 5,082 flights within the ATHINAI FIR/HELLAS UIR. This figure eclipses the previous record of 4,944 flights, which had stood since 10 August 2024.
The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) reported that controllers handled the surge while adhering to national, European, and international safety regulations. The record had already been broken earlier this month: on 4 July 2026, 4,925 flights were recorded, surpassing the August 2025 peak of 4,916 flights.
Summer Peak Drives Traffic
The record comes during the height of the European summer travel season, when Greece sees a sharp increase in tourist arrivals. Athens, as a major hub for both leisure and business travel, benefits from its geographic position linking Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The surge reflects broader trends in European aviation, where demand has rebounded strongly after the pandemic.
Greece's air traffic control system has been under scrutiny in recent years, with investments in modernisation aimed at handling growing volumes. The HCAA emphasised that safety was not compromised despite the record numbers. Controllers worked under standard procedures, coordinating with neighbouring airspaces to manage the flow.
The record also highlights the importance of the Athens FIR, which covers a vast area of the eastern Mediterranean. Airlines operating through Greek airspace include major European carriers such as Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways, as well as low-cost operators like Ryanair and easyJet. The increase in flights is partly driven by expanded routes to Greek islands and cities like Heraklion, Thessaloniki, and Rhodes.
This milestone comes as the European Union moves to expand its carbon market to cover international flights from 2029, a policy that could reshape aviation economics. The record traffic in Greek airspace underscores the challenge of balancing growth with environmental commitments.
For travellers, the record means more options and potentially lower fares, but also raises questions about airport congestion and delays. Greek airports, including Athens International Airport, have invested in capacity upgrades, but peak-season pressure remains high.
The HCAA plans to continue monitoring traffic patterns and adjust resources accordingly. With the summer season still in full swing, further records may be possible in the coming weeks.
