Finland's sauna tradition has found a new home in the heart of Helsinki. Saunasaari, an island entirely devoted to the bathing ritual, opened on 26 June, offering locals and visitors a chance to experience authentic Finnish sauna culture without leaving the capital.

Located just a short water taxi ride from Helsinki's Market Square, Saunasaari features several separate saunas, including a large traditional smoke sauna—the only one of its kind in the Finnish capital. The island also boasts two wood-fired hot tubs, known locally as palju, positioned right by the water to offer panoramic views over the city.

An Immersive Archipelago Experience

The creators, Nina Stenros and Riku Stenros, designed Saunasaari to bring the essence of the Finnish archipelago to an urban setting. “The Finnish archipelago, traditional smoke sauna, open-fire cooking and genuine hospitality are all deeply rooted in our identity,” said Nina Stenros. “We wanted to create an experience where visitors can step into that world without leaving Helsinki.”

The island's positioning is ideal for those looking to combine their sauna or palju session with a cold dip in the Baltic Sea, a practice that is central to the Finnish sauna experience. The contrast between the intense heat of the sauna and the cool waters of the sea is a hallmark of the tradition.

Saunasaari is open every Friday and Saturday evening until 8 August, offering a package that includes access to the saunas and hot tubs, as well as a char-grilled dinner menu prepared at the summer kitchen RÖK. Dishes range from whole smoked fish and open-fire grilled beef entrecôte to grilled summer cabbage for vegetarians.

This new attraction comes at a time when European travel trends are shifting toward unique, local experiences. As noted in our coverage of European Summer Travel in 2026, short breaks and 'coolcations' are gaining popularity, and Saunasaari fits perfectly into this trend by offering a distinctive, culturally rich escape within a city.

For those planning a trip to Helsinki, Saunasaari provides an opportunity to engage with a deeply rooted Finnish tradition in a setting that combines nature, hospitality, and culinary excellence. The island's proximity to the city center makes it accessible, while its design ensures an authentic archipelago atmosphere.
