In Gdańsk, Poland, a lorry driver's indecision at a level crossing led to a collision with an intercity train on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:20 pm CET when the driver's vehicle became trapped between the barriers as they descended while he was crossing the tracks.

According to PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PLK), the national rail infrastructure manager, witnesses at the scene gestured frantically for the driver to break through the barrier and clear the crossing. Instead, the driver first attempted to reverse, then tried to accelerate forward through the barrier, but his hesitation proved fatal.
Security camera footage shows a PKP Intercity train, operating on the route from Gdynia to Zielona Góra, slamming into the lorry. The train driver was taken to hospital with injuries, while the lorry driver and the approximately 250 passengers on board escaped unharmed.
The collision brought rail traffic on the Pruszcz Gdański–Gdańsk Południowy section to a halt. Services were rerouted via alternative lines, causing several hours of disruption. Full rail operations resumed only after 11 pm that evening.
This incident highlights the dangers of level crossings, which remain a persistent safety challenge across Europe.
