Pep Guardiola announced on Friday that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing to a close a decade-long spell that redefined the club and left an indelible mark on European football. The 53-year-old Catalan, who had one year remaining on his contract, will take charge of his final match on Sunday against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

“Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time,” Guardiola said. “Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.”

A Legacy of Trophies and Transformation

Since arriving from Bayern Munich in 2016, Guardiola turned City into a dominant force in English and European football. Under his guidance, the Abu Dhabi-backed club won six Premier League titles, including an unprecedented four in a row, and secured their first Champions League trophy in 2023. In total, he claimed 17 major honours at City, among them a domestic double this season of the English League Cup and FA Cup.

His impact extended beyond silverware. Guardiola introduced a possession-based philosophy—building from the goalkeeper and controlling games through intricate passing—that was widely adopted across England, from grassroots teams to Premier League rivals. City became the first side to amass 100 points in a single season in 2018 and the first to complete a domestic treble the following year. The crowning achievement came in 2023 when City matched Manchester United’s 1999 feat by winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup in the same season.

“The unique approach that he brings to his coaching has allowed him to constantly challenge the accepted truths of our game,” said City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. “It is the reason that in the last 10 years he has not only made Manchester City better, he has also made football better.” Al Mubarak added that it was the “right answer” for Guardiola to step down now.

Challenges and Controversies

Despite his success, Guardiola’s final seasons were not without difficulties. For the first time in his managerial career, he went two campaigns without winning the league title, and City were eliminated from the Champions League before the quarterfinals in each of the last two years. The club also faces more than 100 charges of financial breaches, which Guardiola has consistently denied, saying he is “fully convinced” of City’s innocence.

City chief executive Ferran Sorriano praised Guardiola’s resilience: “If there is something more difficult than winning, it is winning again. It requires incredible persistence, resilience and the humility to start again every year, with the same energy, again and again. This is what Pep did.”

Guardiola will remain with the club in a new role as global ambassador, providing technical advice to City’s ownership group. Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea manager who served as Guardiola’s assistant at City, is the frontrunner to succeed him.

As Guardiola prepares to leave, his legacy is secure: he not only made Manchester City a European powerhouse but also changed the way football is played across the continent. His departure marks the end of an era for English football, one that will be studied by historians and fans alike for years to come.
