Portugal has long been synonymous with cork, supplying roughly half of the global harvest. But the country's cork industry is no longer just about wine stoppers. Corticeira Amorim, the world's largest cork company, is pushing the material into aerospace, construction, and other high-tech sectors, transforming an ancient resource into a modern engineering material.
The journey begins in the cork oak forests of southern Portugal, where harvesting still relies on skilled hands. Work starts at dawn, and the season runs from late May to August. Carlos Cardoso, a harvester at Corticeira Amorim's Rio Frio estate, explains that a single tree can yield cork for 170 to 200 years, providing 15 to 17 extractions over its lifetime. Carlos Abreu, from Amorim Florestal's communication department, notes that each tree needs at least nine years to regenerate its bark, and about 25 years before its first harvest.
These long cycles pose a challenge for small and medium-sized landowners, who make up 90% of Amorim's suppliers. Nuno Oliveira, forestry director at Amorim Florestal, says the company's own forests are meant to demonstrate that sustainable management can be profitable. "With our initiatives in our forests, we are trying to show to other landowners that it is possible to manage the forest differently and to have a good income," he says.
The Rio Frio estate, one of the largest planted cork oak forests in the world, serves as an open-air laboratory. Researchers there are testing ways to accelerate the first harvest, select the most resilient plants, and boost productivity without harming the ecosystem. Healthier trees, they argue, produce better cork.
From bark to high-tech composites
Once harvested, the cork moves to Amorim's factories in northern Portugal, near Porto, where it enters one of the most advanced processing facilities in the industry. Founded as a family business in 1870, Amorim now employs around 4,000 people, operates in more than 100 countries, and generates over €1 billion in annual revenue.
Cork is used in more than 30 industries, from insulation and flooring to sealing systems. Aerospace is among the fastest-growing segments, though much of the work is shrouded in industrial secrecy. In the company's showroom, Eduardo Soares, innovation and business development director, highlights a flagship product: "P50, one of our best-known materials, which is essentially a cork composite, a thermal protection shield that is used in multiple stages of a launcher device, so whenever there is a need for protection from the heat."
Amorim says it has invested over €90 million in research and development over the past decade. That investment has also modernized its core business: cork stoppers. The company claims to have eliminated TCA, the compound responsible for cork taint, which can spoil wine.
Portugal's broader economy has been performing well, with employment growth leading the EU, though GDP figures have been debated. The cork industry is a key part of that economic story, and its innovations are helping to secure Portugal's position in global markets.
As Europe pushes for more sustainable materials, cork's renewable nature gives it an edge. The EU's post-2030 renewables overhaul may also create new demand for natural insulation products. For now, Amorim's focus remains on proving that cork can compete with synthetic materials in demanding applications.
The company's approach is a model for how traditional industries can adapt. By combining centuries-old harvesting techniques with cutting-edge science, Portugal is showing that cork is far more than a bottle stopper—it is a material for the future.
