One of London's most historic West End venues is set to carry a new name. The Shaftesbury Theatre, located on Shaftesbury Avenue, will be renamed the Judi Dench Theatre in recognition of the actress's seven-decade career on stage and screen. The announcement was made by the theatre's management, with Dame Judi Dench describing the gesture as “truly overwhelming.”
Dench, 91, is widely regarded as one of Britain's finest performers. Her accolades include an Oscar, a Tony, two Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, and seven Olivier Awards. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1988 and is known to global audiences for her portrayal of M in the James Bond franchise, a role she held for 17 years.
The Shaftesbury Theatre has a storied history. It opened in 1911 as the New Prince's Theatre and was renamed in 1962 to commemorate the original Shaftesbury Theatre, which was destroyed during the Blitz in World War II. The venue has hosted numerous productions, including the long-running musical Hair and more recent hits like Motown the Musical.
A Personal Connection to the Venue
Dench's relationship with the Shaftesbury Theatre spans decades. She was a key figure in the Theatre of Comedy, a company founded by her late husband, Michael Williams, and others, which used the venue for productions and meetings. In a statement, Dench said: “The Shaftesbury Theatre has always held a special place in my heart. My relationship to the Theatre of Comedy and to the Taffner family goes back many years… Live theatre continues to be so important as a way of telling stories and entertaining audiences, something I have aimed to do all my working life.”
Eleanor Lang, Chief Executive of the theatre, expressed excitement about the change. “Not only does she play an important role in our history, but she is an iconic figure of the stage and screen landscape,” Lang said. “We don’t celebrate brilliant women enough in our West End theatre names, so we are delighted that her name will be forever in lights above our doorway.”
Donald Taffner Jnr., Chairman of the theatre's parent company, DLT Entertainment, paid tribute to Dench as a “close friend of the DLT family for so long.” He recalled fond memories of her at the Shaftesbury, “from the meetings for the Theatre of Comedy members to when her husband was performing in a number of the Theatre of Comedy productions.”
The renaming is part of a broader trend in London's West End to honor living legends. While many theatres are named after historical figures or locations, the Judi Dench Theatre will join a select group of venues bearing the names of contemporary performers, such as the Harold Pinter Theatre and the Gielgud Theatre. The move also highlights the enduring importance of live theatre in the UK's cultural landscape, even as the industry faces challenges from rising costs and competition from streaming services.
Dench's career has been marked by versatility, from Shakespearean roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company to film performances in Shakespeare in Love and Philomena. Her work has earned her a reputation as a national treasure, and the theatre renaming cements her legacy in London's cultural geography.
The Shaftesbury Theatre will officially become the Judi Dench Theatre later this year, with a ceremony expected to draw figures from across the entertainment world. For now, the venue continues to host performances, including the current production of The Drifters Girl.
