Nicole Taylor, the lead singer of the American country trio Taylor Red, has died at the age of 35 after a battle with breast cancer. Her sisters and bandmates, Natalie and Nika, confirmed the news in an emotional YouTube video posted on 28 September, saying they were 'shocked and heartbroken' by the loss.
In the video, Natalie spoke of their initial hopes: 'We thought she'd be here sharing her story of earthly healing. Instead, we're sharing her story of heavenly healing and she's at peace and no longer suffering, so we're thankful for that.'
Nika revealed that Nicole was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 2022, describing it as 'very aggressive'. The disease later progressed to stage four. The sisters, who grew up in Mississippi, described Nicole as their 'fearless leader'.
A musical journey from Mississippi roots
The trio formed in 2010 under the name Red Roots, with Nicole on lead vocals, guitar, banjo, and violin. They released their debut album, Red Roots, in 2011, followed by The Middle of Nowhere (2012) and Triplicity (2014). In 2018, they rebranded as Taylor Red.
Their 2021 single 'Country Money' went viral on TikTok, giving the band a late-career surge in popularity. The song's catchy chorus and down-home lyrics resonated with a new generation of country music fans across the United States and beyond.
Nicole's death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians. Many have highlighted her resilience and the close bond she shared with her sisters, both on and off stage.
While the band's story is rooted in the American South, their music found an audience in Europe, where country music has a dedicated following. The trio performed at festivals and venues across the continent, including in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, building a loyal fanbase.
Nicole's battle with breast cancer also drew attention to the disease's impact on young women. Her openness about her diagnosis and treatment resonated with many, and her story has been shared widely on social media as a reminder of the importance of early detection.
In a statement, the sisters thanked their supporters for their 'love and prayers' during this difficult time. They have not yet announced plans for the future of Taylor Red, but they have indicated that Nicole's legacy will live on through their music.
Nicole Taylor is survived by her sisters, Natalie and Nika, and a wide circle of family and friends. Her passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the strength found in family bonds.
