Wellness tourism has boomed in recent years, with many resorts turning to high-tech gadgets like hyperbaric chambers and cryotherapy to attract guests. But Shanti-Som, a brand that started in Marbella in 2011, is taking a more grounded approach.
The company is preparing to open a second location in Portugal's Algarve region in February 2027. Shanti-Som Algarve will be housed in a restored 19th-century farmhouse, surrounded by four hectares of orange and almond orchards, just a 20-minute drive from Faro Airport.
The retreat will have 22 rooms and will offer six structured programmes, each focused on a different goal. The aim, according to the team, is to teach habits that guests can easily maintain after they leave.
A hybrid of holiday and wellness club
Hotel manager Ophélie Acris describes the concept as "a hybrid of a holiday, a private wellness club and a gym." She adds: "You can switch off completely and be looked after, but you also leave with real, practical ways to feel stronger, healthier and happier."
Acris explains that the experience is tailored to individual needs: "Whether someone comes for better sleep, more strength, a reset or simply time away from everyday demands, the experience is shaped around what they need."
Guests can choose from six programmes: relaxation, yoga, pilates, detox, strength and fitness, and burnout and nervous system recovery. The last two are exclusive to the Algarve location.
The strength and fitness programme is designed for those focused on longevity, bone density, and muscle strength as they age. It includes one-on-one training sessions, reformer Pilates, guided hikes, and a full health check with nutritional consultation.
For burnout and nervous system recovery, the focus shifts to breathwork, guided meditations, sound healing, and hot-cold contrast therapy, alongside life coaching sessions.
The property's wellness area includes an infinity pool, sauna, hammam, ice bath, and gym, plus private treatment rooms for massages and facials. All stays are full-board, and guests can book for as short or as long as they wish.
Portugal has become a popular destination for wellness retreats, and the Algarve's mild climate and natural beauty make it an ideal setting. The opening of Shanti-Som Algarve is expected to attract both international visitors and locals looking for a reset.
For those interested in Portuguese culture, the country has seen other notable developments, such as the recent passing of journalist Joaquim Letria. Meanwhile, health trends in Portugal continue to evolve, with teen substance use declining but vulnerable groups still at risk.
As the wellness industry grows, Shanti-Som's approach—combining simplicity with personalisation—may resonate with travellers seeking more than just a temporary escape.
