Police in the Netherlands have detained four men as part of an investigation into the drugging and sexual assault of multiple women, a case that has drawn comparisons to the Gisèle Pelicot scandal in France. The suspects, whose names have not been released under Dutch privacy rules, were arrested following a series of raids across the country last week.

According to a police statement, evidence suggests that several women in the Netherlands may have been drugged by someone within their immediate social circle. The victims were then subjected to sexual acts while being filmed, authorities said.

International Cooperation and Evidence Gathering

The arrests came after Dutch authorities acted on intelligence shared by law enforcement agencies in Germany and the United Kingdom. Over two days, officers searched multiple homes, seizing computers, telephones, and data storage devices. Police are now analyzing the material to determine the full extent of the abuse.

“What is clear is that this is a case with an enormous impact,” said Milou van der Kolk of the Rotterdam police’s Sexual Crimes Team. She added that the suspects are believed to have used social media chat groups to share images of sexual abuse and exchange advice on how to drug victims.

The number of victims remains unclear, but investigators are working to identify individuals from the images found on the confiscated devices. “The news that your partner or an acquaintance may have drugged you and perhaps even raped you or attempted to do so can turn your life completely upside down,” van der Kolk said.

Police have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation continues.

Echoes of the Pelicot Case

The case has drawn comparisons to the trial of Dominique Pelicot, who in December 2024 was convicted along with 50 other men for the repeated sexual assault of his then-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, over nearly a decade. Dominique Pelicot admitted to mixing sedatives into her food and drink, rendering her unconscious so he and others could rape her. He received a 20-year prison sentence, while the other defendants received terms ranging from three to 15 years.

Gisèle Pelicot, who waived her right to anonymity, has become a symbol of resilience and a catalyst for broader discussions about consent and drug-facilitated sexual violence across Europe. Her case has prompted calls for stricter laws and better support for victims in several member states.

The Dutch investigation underscores the cross-border nature of such crimes, with authorities in multiple countries collaborating to track down perpetrators. The use of encrypted messaging apps and online forums to share illegal content remains a significant challenge for law enforcement across the continent.

As the probe unfolds, police are urging anyone who believes they may have been a victim to come forward. The case is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of sexual violence facilitated by drugs, a crime that often leaves victims with no memory of the assault.
