As summer approaches, the perennial tension between tourism and local life intensifies in Europe's most visited cities. Barcelona, Venice, Dubrovnik, and Mykonos will once again draw millions, but a growing number of travellers are seeking alternatives that ease pressure on overburdened destinations. Skyscanner's latest analysis, based on search interest data for the coming season, highlights eight European locations that remain relatively undiscovered.

Nordic Cool: Turku and Kiruna

In Finland, while Oulu basks in its European Capital of Culture spotlight and Lapland attracts midnight-sun seekers, Turku offers a quieter immersion into the country's heritage. As Finland's oldest city, its centre is a living museum of cobblestone streets, the Old Great Square, and Turku Cathedral. The annual Medieval Turku festival transforms the city with period entertainment, handicrafts, and food. Beyond history, Turku's culinary scene has earned recognition: Kaskis became the first restaurant outside Helsinki to receive a Michelin star. Diners can choose riverside terraces along the Aura or explore the city's sustainability-focused menus.

Further north, Sweden's Kiruna made global headlines last year when its iconic church was relocated over two days to accommodate the expansion of the world's largest underground iron-ore mine. Visitors can tour LKAB's visitor centre to understand the engineering behind the town's gradual move. Situated 200 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, Kiruna offers endless daylight in summer, ideal for hiking in the surrounding mountains.

Italian and Greek Gems

Calabria, the toe of Italy's boot, remains overshadowed by Puglia's popularity. Crotone, a historic Greek city and home to Pythagoras, offers layered history at Capo Colonna Archaeological Park, where a Doric temple overlooks the sea, and at the National Archaeological Museum, which houses significant finds. Its beaches are uncrowded, and the city serves as a gateway to three national parks: Sila, Aspromonte, and Pollino.

In Greece, the Dodecanese island of Kalymnos has carved a niche as a climbing destination, with nearly 2,500 sport routes ranging from beginner to expert. Hikers can tackle shorter trails or the 10-day Kalymnos Trail, which circles the island over 100 kilometres. The island's sponge-diving heritage has faded due to overfishing, but scuba diving now draws enthusiasts to its clear waters.

On the mainland, Ioannina in northwestern Greece sits on the shores of Lake Pamvotida. A short boat trip reaches a small island with Byzantine monasteries; kayaking around the lake is another option. The city's castle, dating from the Byzantine Empire, houses the Silversmithing Museum, which traces the region's historic craft.

Atlantic and Volcanic Escapes

In the Azores, Pico Island remains less frequented than its neighbours. It is home to Portugal's highest peak, Mount Pico at 2,315 metres, with trails detailed on the Visit Azores website. The island's UNESCO-listed viniculture, dating to the 15th century, offers wine tastings and vineyard tours.

In central France, Clermont-Ferrand is surrounded by the Chaîne des Puys volcanic chain, whose dark volcanic stone defines the city's architecture, including its Gothic cathedral. Hiking trails traverse 80 volcanoes, with routes available on the Clermont Auvergne Volcans tourism site. The city is also the headquarters of Michelin, and its four Michelin-starred restaurants include Le Pré, which holds two stars.

For travellers seeking to avoid the summer crush, these destinations offer a blend of culture, nature, and history without the queues. As summer airfares drop on key European routes, the timing may be right to explore beyond the usual hotspots.
