Italy may be celebrated for its art, cuisine, and landscapes, but its roads tell a different story. According to a recent global survey by car rental platform Discovercars.com, Italy has the most aggressive drivers in the world, with 23% of respondents reporting erratic or reckless behaviour on Italian roads.
The United Kingdom, often associated with polite queuing and scenic countryside, came second with 11% of mentions, with London singled out as a particular hotspot. The United States followed at 9%, while France and Australia each recorded 5%. Spain and Turkey tied at 4%.
What annoys drivers most?
The survey also delved into specific behaviours that irk motorists. Topping the list was failing to indicate at turns, cited by 56% of respondents. Tailgating came next at 46%, followed by slow driving in the overtaking lane (43%) and sudden braking (20%).
These findings suggest that while aggressive driving is a concern, it is often the smaller, everyday discourtesies that fray nerves behind the wheel.
Politeness on and off the road
Perceptions of politeness vary widely, and not just behind the wheel. A separate poll by financial services company Remitly ranked Italy 24th out of 25 countries for general manners, with only Austria scoring lower. At the other end of the spectrum, Japan topped the politeness chart, followed by Canada and the UK.
Interestingly, when asked to rate their own behaviour, Japanese respondents gave themselves a relatively modest 8.73 out of 10. Brazilians and Chileans were the most self-assured, averaging 9.46, with Indians (9.41), Swedes (9.40), and French (9.40) close behind.

While the survey highlights the challenges of driving in certain countries, it also serves as a reminder that courteous behaviour can make journeys safer and more pleasant for everyone.
