Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has reportedly held discussions in recent weeks with the French firm Mistral AI about a potential partnership aimed at competing with rivals OpenAI and Anthropic. The talks, which also involved the American code-editing startup Cursor, were reported by Business Insider, citing sources familiar with the matter.
European AI in the Global Race
Mistral AI, headquartered in Paris, is one of Europe's most valuable AI companies and a key developer of large language models (LLMs). It is widely regarded as the continent's strongest contender in frontier AI models, a field dominated by US-based firms. A partnership with xAI would have brought together Musk's growing AI infrastructure and Mistral's advanced models, potentially accelerating development of more capable systems.
The report comes as SpaceX, another Musk-owned company that also owns xAI, announced a deal with Cursor this week. Under the agreement, SpaceX has the option to acquire Cursor for $60 billion, signaling Musk's aggressive push into AI-related ventures.
Musk's xAI launched its Grok chatbot in 2023 and has since been scaling up its computing power. In 2024, the company built a supercomputer called "Colossus" in Memphis, Tennessee, in just three months. The cluster, powered by 200,000 GPUs running on Tesla Megapack batteries, is said to be the most powerful AI computing cluster in the world. Musk has stated plans to expand it to 1 million GPUs.
The AI industry is in a race to build massive clusters of interconnected chips, known as GPUs, which enable faster training of more sophisticated models. European companies like Mistral face challenges in accessing such hardware, making partnerships with well-funded US firms potentially attractive. However, the talks with xAI did not result in a deal, and Mistral continues to operate independently.
This development highlights the growing competition in AI, where European startups are increasingly courted by American tech giants. The European Union has been working to foster its own AI ecosystem through regulations and funding, but the allure of US capital and infrastructure remains strong. For now, Mistral remains a key player in Europe's AI landscape, while xAI continues its quest to challenge the dominance of OpenAI and Anthropic.
