Across Europe, a growing number of hotels are redefining the guest experience by placing contemporary art at the centre of their offering. Rather than relegating art to galleries, these properties weave it into everyday spaces, allowing travellers to live alongside works by renowned artists. This shift reflects a broader effort to democratise access to culture, making art a spontaneous part of travel rather than a scheduled visit.
MACAM: Lisbon's Museum-Hotel Hybrid
In Lisbon, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martins (MACAM) opened its doors in March 2025, combining a hotel with a museum dedicated to Portuguese and international art. The private collection of founder Armando Martins spans over five decades, featuring works from the late 19th century to the present. The museum is split into two sections: one focuses on Portuguese art from the end of the 19th century until the 1980s, highlighting artists such as Julião Sarmento, Paula Rego, Helena Almeida, and Pedro Cabrita Reis. The other section is continuously updated, showcasing Portuguese and international art from 1980 onwards, including pieces by Marina Abramović, Isa Genzken, and Dan Graham.
Vera Cordeiro, Director of the MACAM Hotel, explained the philosophy behind the integration: “The integration of a contemporary art museum with a hotel transforms the way the public engages with art, shifting it from a more institutional setting to a more everyday and immersive environment.” She added that proximity “tends to break down barriers, physical, symbolic, and even psychological, that sometimes alienate audiences from the so-called traditional museum.” Cordeiro hopes guests leave with “a cultural experience lived in a more intimate way,” where art serves as inspiration rather than mere decoration.
Byblos Art Hotel Villa Amistà: Renaissance Meets Avant-Garde
On the outskirts of Verona, the Byblos Art Hotel Villa Amistà sits within a villa dating back to 1700, designed by architect Ignazio Pellegrini. This five-star property blends Renaissance elegance with avant-garde art across its 56 rooms. The Millar Room, designed by Beatriz Millar, embodies her poetic vision, while the Love Room brings together designers and artists from eight countries, including Andy Warhol. The hotel’s polychromatic interiors create a vibrant backdrop for a stay that merges history with contemporary creativity.
Elizabeth Arthotel: Alpine Art in Ischgl
In the ski resort village of Ischgl, Austria, the Elizabeth Arthotel has integrated art and sculpture since its founding in 1976. Named after founder Elisabeth Aloys, the hotel welcomes guests aged 16 and above. Its latest addition is a rooftop sculptural commission titled “Sissy” by the Austrian sister duo Mercedes & Franziska Welte / NONOS, referencing Elisabeth's nickname. For those unable to visit, the hotel offers a virtual version of its “The Art of Legacy” exhibition, spanning five decades of archival photography from the 1960s to the present.
While the US-based 21c Museum Hotels chain also blends art and lodging, Europe’s offerings stand out for their deep integration with local artistic heritage. As Cordeiro noted, the goal is to foster “a more intimate and spontaneous relationship with the artworks,” allowing for unmediated discoveries. For travellers seeking more than a place to sleep, these hotels provide a cultural immersion that lingers long after checkout.
