Golden Eagle Luxury Trains has unveiled a significantly updated version of its Balkan Explorer itinerary, a 12-day rail journey linking Venice with Istanbul aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express. The revised route, which crosses Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Türkiye, reflects a growing demand among travellers for deeper immersion in the Balkans beyond the region's headline capitals.

The journey begins with two nights in Venice, offering passengers time to explore the lagoon city before boarding the private train eastwards via Trieste and into Slovenia. Among the new highlights is an exclusive after-hours visit to the Postojna Cave system, one of Europe's largest karst cave networks, allowing guests to wander through its vast chambers away from daytime crowds.

New Croatian Stops and Extended Time in Bosnia

From Slovenia, the train continues along Croatia's Adriatic coast, making new stops in the historic port cities of Pula and Rijeka. Pula is known for its remarkably preserved Roman amphitheatre, while Rijeka offers a blend of Austro-Hungarian architecture and a lively waterfront. The itinerary then heads inland to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where travellers now spend more time in both Sarajevo and Mostar. This extended stay allows for a deeper exploration of the region's Ottoman heritage, the scars of the 1990s conflict, and the dramatic Dinaric Alps scenery that surrounds these cities.

An overnight hotel stay has also been added in Belgrade, giving passengers a full evening and morning to experience Serbia's capital. The city's blend of communist-era blocks, bohemian Skadarlija quarter, and vibrant nightlife along the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers offers a stark contrast to the Adriatic coast. From Belgrade, the train continues through Sofia and Plovdiv in Bulgaria before arriving in Istanbul.

Onboard Experience and Pricing

Throughout the journey, passengers travel aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express, where en-suite cabins, restaurant cars serving regional cuisine, and a bar lounge car evoke the golden age of European luxury rail travel. Off-train excursions are included, ranging from guided city tours and cultural performances to exclusive visits to historic landmarks outside regular opening hours.

The Balkan Explorer operates on selected departures. Upcoming dates include 2 October 2026, followed by 7 May, 10 September, and 19 October 2027. Prices start from €21,100 per person for a twin room in Deluxe Class on the October 2026 departure, rising to €23,600 for 2027 departures. Superior Deluxe Class accommodation is also available. The fare includes two hotel nights in Venice, an overnight stay in Belgrade, a hotel stay in Istanbul, seven nights aboard the train, all meals, drinks while on board, excursions, transfers, and gratuities.

For those seeking alternative routes, Golden Eagle also operates an eight-day Paris to Istanbul journey crossing Austria, Slovenia, Serbia, and Bulgaria, as well as the 11-day Grand Alpine Express linking Budapest and Venice through Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, and northern Italy. The refreshed Balkan Explorer underscores a broader trend in European travel: a shift toward slower, more immersive journeys that connect iconic cities with the lesser-known cultural and natural treasures of the continent's southeastern edge.
