Home cooling prevents thousands of heat deaths in US, study finds

As global temperatures climb, the humble air conditioner is emerging as a silent lifesaver. A study published in Nature Health on Monday reveals that household cooling prevents over 5,260 heat-related deaths annually in the United States alone, cutting heat-attributable mortality by more than half.

Researchers from the Yale School of Public Health and the Yale School of the Environment analyzed nearly 30 million death records from 2010 to 2020, cross-referencing each with daily temperatures in the county of death and estimates of household electricity use for cooling. The focus was on actual cooling usage rather than mere ownership, a distinction that matters because owning an AC unit does not guarantee residents can afford to run it.

Cooling use, not ownership, is key

“Everyone agrees that air conditioning works, but knowing that it works for one person is not the same as knowing how much death it prevents across an entire population,” said Kai Chen, senior author and associate professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, in a press release.

The study’s findings shed light on how lower-income households cope with extreme heat. Narasimha Rao, a co-author and professor of energy systems at the Yale School of the Environment, noted that “while some choose to turn on their ACs, others make the uncomfortable choice of bearing the heat to save money for food.”

Interestingly, the study found that maximum cooling offered no additional health benefits compared with average use. This underscores the need to balance the life-saving potential of air conditioning against its environmental costs, including higher energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The results also carry implications for housing policy. Robert Dubrow, a co-author and founding faculty director of the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health, argued that “landlords in the United States are required to provide heating in the winter, and our study contributes to a compelling body of literature that indicates they also should be required to provide cooling in the summer.”

Across the Atlantic, the role of air conditioning has become a political flashpoint. In France, politicians have drawn ideological battle lines over cooling as Europe grapples with record-breaking temperatures, often exceeding 40°C. Meanwhile, the European Commission advocates a “holistic” approach that prioritizes passive and efficient cooling technologies—better building design, insulation, and urban planning—rather than mass installation of AC units. Brussels wants Europe to rely on efficient air conditioning only where it is genuinely needed.

This transatlantic contrast highlights a broader question: how to protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat without exacerbating climate change. While the US study demonstrates the clear health benefits of AC, European policymakers are exploring alternative strategies that could offer similar protection with a smaller environmental footprint.

As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, the findings from Yale offer a data-driven foundation for policy decisions on both sides of the ocean. For now, the evidence is clear: air conditioning saves lives, but its use must be tempered with environmental responsibility.
