Rome has formally signed a contract for six Airbus A330 MRTT multi-role tanker transport aircraft, a deal worth approximately €1.39 billion including long-term logistic support. The agreement, finalised on 16 April 2026 and published on the European TED portal on 19 May, represents a decisive break from the earlier preference for the American Boeing KC-46 Pegasus.

The procurement process, launched in 2022, was anything but straightforward. Italy initially selected the Boeing KC-46 to replace and supplement its ageing KC-767A fleet, but that programme was cancelled in 2024. A subsequent European tender, opened later that year, failed to attract any fully compliant bids by April 2025. Only in December 2025 did Airbus emerge as the sole viable contender, leading to the final contract signature.

A Geopolitical Signal in the Mediterranean

Defence analysts view the Italian decision as a clear reorientation toward European supply chains. While both the KC-46 and the A330 MRTT are fully NATO-compatible, the choice of Airbus shifts the logistical and maintenance centre of gravity from the United States to Europe. This strengthens a European ecosystem of training, spare parts, and industrial cooperation—an increasingly important consideration as NATO and Baltic States Brace Against Drone Threats and US Security Shift.

The A330 MRTT is not merely a refuelling platform. It also serves as a strategic transport aircraft capable of moving personnel and materiel over long distances, and can support humanitarian missions. For the Italian Air Force, the six new tankers will significantly enhance power projection, particularly for next-generation fighters such as the F-35 and Eurofighter Typhoon, which require extended endurance during operations.

Italy now becomes the 19th operator of the A330 MRTT worldwide, a platform that has steadily gained market share against its US rival. The aircraft’s success reflects both its technical reliability and the growing preference among NATO allies for European-made equipment. The MRTT is designed for high operational tempo, offering air-to-air refuelling that allows fighters to remain on station longer without returning to base—a critical advantage for missions in the wider Mediterranean and beyond.

Technical details of the Italian order remain to be finalised. It is not yet clear whether Rome will opt for the standard A330 MRTT or the more fuel-efficient MRTT+ variant based on the A330neo. The level of Italian industrial participation in the programme also remains under negotiation, a factor that will determine the economic and technological return for the country.

The shift away from Boeing is part of a broader trend. The KC-46 has faced technical problems and delays that have hampered its export prospects, while the A330 MRTT has been adopted by numerous NATO and non-NATO allies. Analysts caution against framing the Italian choice as a political defeat for Washington; rather, it reflects a pragmatic industrial decision that consolidates the European axis in military tanker capabilities.

This move aligns with wider European efforts to bolster defence autonomy. As Switzerland Ramps Up Drone Capabilities Amid European Security Shift, and other nations reassess their procurement strategies, Italy’s decision underscores a continent-wide trend toward strengthening indigenous defence industries while maintaining interoperability within the NATO framework.
