It is a scene that has become instantly familiar to football fans across Europe: a stone-faced Mick Jagger, shaking his head in quiet despair. The Rolling Stones frontman attended the World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina in Doha on Tuesday, and his reaction to Enzo Fernández's equalising goal has spread rapidly across social media, turning the 81-year-old rock icon into an unlikely meme.

England, who had taken an early lead through Jude Bellingham, ultimately lost 2-1, dashing hopes of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966. As Fernández's shot found the net, cameras captured Jagger slowly shaking his head, his expression a mixture of resignation and disappointment. The clip has been viewed millions of times, with one fan posting: “Mick Jagger speaks for the nation.”

The 'Jagger Curse' Returns

For some England supporters, Jagger's presence at the match was a bad omen. The musician has attended several high-profile England defeats, including the 2018 semi-final loss to Croatia and the 4-1 thrashing by Germany in 2010. This has led to jokes about a “Jagger curse,” reminiscent of the so-called “Trump curse” in American sports. However, the theory has a flaw: Jagger was also present when England beat Norway 2-1 in the round of 16, a match that saw the team advance to the semi-finals.

The meme comes as the Rolling Stones released their 25th studio album, Foreign Tongues, last week. Jagger's appearance at the match was a rare public outing for the band, who are currently on tour.

England's defeat sets up a final between Argentina and Spain, who defeated France 2-0 in the other semi-final. That match, played in Texas, was a €2.8bn showdown that saw Spain spoil Bastille Day celebrations. The final will be a rematch of the 2022 World Cup final, which Argentina won on penalties.

For England, the loss is a bitter pill to swallow. The team had shown promise throughout the tournament, with Bellingham's double against Argentina in the semi-final being a highlight. But the 'Jagger curse'—or simply Argentina's resilience—proved too much.

As the meme continues to circulate, it serves as a reminder of the emotional highs and lows of international football. For Jagger, it is just another chapter in a long career of being in the spotlight—even when he is not performing.
