Embarking on a solo journey can feel intimidating, but choosing a destination with strong safety records can significantly reduce anxiety. A recent analysis by Squaremouth, a US travel insurance comparison site, has identified the world's safest countries for solo travelers, and Europe dominates the list.
The study evaluated more than 100 countries, focusing on those with “very high” or “high” human development according to the UN's Human Development Index. It considered factors such as the Global Peace Index score, local perceptions of safety (based on Numbeo data), median mobile internet download speeds, and access to medical care. The result is a ranking that highlights destinations where solo travelers can feel secure walking alone at night and confident in local infrastructure.
European Microstates Lead the Way
San Marino, the tiny landlocked republic surrounded by Italy, emerged as the safest destination overall, with a risk index of just 0.78 out of 10. According to the data, 90% of locals feel comfortable walking alone at night, and the country benefits from a robust healthcare system and low environmental risks. Its compact size and low crime rates make it an ideal choice for first-time solo travelers.
Andorra, the microstate nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, came second with a risk score of 1.33. Known for its ski resorts and duty-free shopping, Andorra also offers a high sense of personal safety and excellent medical facilities.
Singapore, a global city-state in Southeast Asia, took third place with a score of 1.56, praised for its strict laws and low crime. But the top five also includes two European nations: Austria and Czechia. Austria, with its alpine landscapes and historic cities like Vienna and Salzburg, scored well on peace and healthcare. Czechia, whose capital Prague is a perennial favorite among solo travelers, offers a vibrant cultural scene and a strong safety record.
Further down the top ten, Estonia, Denmark, and Slovenia also made the cut. Estonia, a digital pioneer with a medieval capital Tallinn, combines modern connectivity with a peaceful environment. Denmark, consistently ranked among the world's happiest countries, provides a safe and welcoming atmosphere for solo explorers. Slovenia, with its Lake Bled and Julian Alps, is a hidden gem that balances natural beauty with low crime.
For those planning a solo trip, these European destinations offer more than just safety. They provide rich cultural experiences, efficient public transport, and a variety of activities—from hiking in the Alps to exploring historic city centers. Travelers can also consider upcoming travel hotspots or active travel options to enhance their journey.
The full top ten list: San Marino, Andorra, Singapore, Austria, Czechia, Qatar, Estonia, Brunei, Denmark, and Slovenia. While no destination is entirely risk-free, these countries offer a strong foundation for a safe and enjoyable solo adventure.
