When Europeans think of craft beer, cities like London, Munich, Brussels, and Prague often come to mind. Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, rarely makes the list—especially given the region's reputation for rakia. Yet Bulgaria's beer culture, introduced by immigrants in the mid-19th century, has quietly grown. According to a Kirin Beer University Report, the country now ranks 14th in the world for beer consumption per capita.
On a recent visit, I explored Sofia's craft beer offerings. Here are the standout spots.
High Five Taproom
Located in the city center, High Five Taproom is a cozy space with a handful of indoor and outdoor tables. Despite its small size, it offers around a dozen beers on draught at any time, including at least one or two from local breweries. A flight of four costs about €12. The fridges are stocked with bottles and cans, including a beer with vegan bacon—more a novelty than a recommendation.
Nosferatu
For fans of metal and rock music, Nosferatu is a hybrid bar and bottle shop with a vampire theme. On my visit, the playlist featured the aptly named Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys. There are about five beers on draft and a selection of bottles and cans. Staff are friendly and happy to offer recommendations.
Ale House
Ale House offers pour-your-own-pints with live beer at each table. If live beer isn't your preference, you can order a tasting set including a pale ale, an Irish red, and a New England IPA. It also has a solid food menu, making it a good starting point for a bar-hopping evening.
Crafter Bar
Crafter Bar is a lively spot with a great outdoor area, ideal for warm summer nights. It features around ten beers on draft, including a couple from Bulgarian breweries.
Sofia's craft beer scene is still emerging, but these bars offer a solid introduction. For those interested in broader European trends, Bulgaria's economic landscape is also notable: take-home pay on €100,000 across Europe shows Bulgaria tops, Belgium trails. Meanwhile, the city's cultural calendar includes events like Sofia Hosts International Cat Show Expo with 150 Felines from Across Europe.
