Spain finally found their rhythm in this year's World Cup, dismantling Saudi Arabia 4-0 in a commanding performance that erased the disappointment of their opening draw. The victory, secured in the second group match, showcased the depth and attacking flair that had been missing against Cape Verde.

Yamal Shines on the Biggest Stage

Eighteen-year-old Lamine Yamal, making his first World Cup start, needed just ten minutes to open his account on the sport's premier stage. The Barcelona prodigy slid in at the far post to convert a low cross from Mikel Oyarzabal, sending a clear signal of Spain's intent. The goal, a product of quick interplay and precise movement, underscored the teenager's composure under pressure.

Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad forward, soon turned from provider to scorer. He netted twice within the first 25 minutes, the first a clinical finish from inside the box and the second a well-placed shot that left the Saudi goalkeeper with no chance. By the half-hour mark, the contest was effectively over, with Spain controlling possession and creating chances at will.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente made a bold statement at halftime, substituting both Yamal and Oyarzabal to rest them for the upcoming group finale against Uruguay. The move reflected the team's confidence and the depth of talent available on the bench.

The second half began with Spain extending their lead just four minutes after the restart. A shot from left-back Marc Cucurella deflected off Saudi defender Hassan Altambakti and into the net, an own goal that sealed the rout. The scoreline could have been larger, but Spain's efficiency in front of goal was a marked improvement from their goalless stalemate against World Cup debutants Cape Verde.

That 0-0 draw, a frustrating start for a team considered among the tournament favourites, had raised questions about Spain's ability to break down disciplined defences. Against Saudi Arabia, they answered emphatically, combining quick passing with incisive runs and clinical finishing.

The victory puts Spain in a strong position to advance from Group H, though they face a stern test against Uruguay in their final group game. Uruguay, who have also shown resilience, will be a different proposition, but Spain's performance against Saudi Arabia suggests they are peaking at the right time.

Off the pitch, Spain's footballing success comes amid broader challenges. The country is bracing for its first major heatwave of 2025, with temperatures potentially reaching 45°C in parts of the south, a reminder of the extreme heat could cost France, Italy, and Spain billions by 2030. Meanwhile, Spain's renewable energy boom has helped shield households from energy price spikes, a contrast to the volatility seen elsewhere in Europe.

For now, though, the focus remains on the pitch. Spain's emphatic win has reignited their World Cup campaign and silenced early doubters. With Yamal emerging as a genuine star and the team clicking into gear, they look well placed to make a deep run in the tournament.
