The Antikythera Mechanism: Ancient Greek Computer That Predicted Eclipses

In 1901, sponge divers exploring a Roman shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera stumbled upon a corroded bronze and wood object. For years, its purpose remained a mystery. Today, it is recognized as the world's first analogue computer: a geared mechanism from 150–100 BCE that calculated astronomical positions and predicted eclipses.

A Device Ahead of Its Time

The artefact, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, dates to the late 2nd or early 1st century BCE, coinciding with the ship's sinking. The Antikythera Mechanism Research Project suggests it may have originated in Corinthian colonies, possibly Syracuse, linking it to the school of Archimedes, though its exact creator remains unknown.

The device contained over 30 hand-operated bronze gears that modelled the cycles of the Moon, Sun, and known planets. It used an epicyclic gearing system, akin to a modern differential, to account for orbital irregularities. On its front, a half-white, half-black sphere rotated to display the lunar phase. On the back, four dials tracked the Metonic cycle, the Saros cycle, the calendar of panhellenic games, and the exeligmos, which refined eclipse predictions.

Decades of Deciphering

Unlocking the mechanism's secrets took decades. In 1959, physicist Derek de Solla Price began studying the 82 fragments. Later, with Greek nuclear physicist Charalampos Karakalos, he captured the first X-ray and gamma-ray images of its interior, revealing 27 gear wheels—some with 127 and 235 teeth. This precision astonished scientists and led Google to dedicate a 2017 doodle to it as the first mechanical computer.

However, not all is certain. Studies by Tony Freeth and Alexander Jones simulated the mechanism and found its Mars indicator could be off by up to 38 degrees, a margin they attribute to the limits of Greek astronomy rather than manufacturing flaws. A more recent study suggests even minor manufacturing errors could cause jamming, reopening debate on whether the device was fully functional or more cumbersome than practical.

Interest persists. Replicas have been built worldwide for education, such as Mexico's Monumental Antikythera Mechanism project, which trains physicists and engineers. Researcher Raúl Pérez Enríquez captures its allure: "It is the universe of the ancient world seen from a new perspective, with the Earth at the centre and the planets revolving around it, just as the Greeks imagined it more than two millennia ago."

The mechanism's legacy extends beyond archaeology. It underscores the sophistication of Hellenistic science and its influence on European thought.
