This summer, renting a boat to explore Europe's coastline may become as straightforward as ordering a car. Uber has partnered with the peer-to-peer charter platform Click&Boat to introduce Uber Boat, a service that allows users to book boat rides through the Uber app. The pilot launches in mid-June across 23 coastal cities in Portugal, France, Spain, Italy, and Croatia, including Split, Dubrovnik, Saint-Tropez, Nice, Mallorca, and Barcelona.
Click&Boat, which operates a fleet of over 55,000 vessels, will offer a range of themed experiences such as sunset cruises, water sports, appetisers at sea, and day trips to hidden coves. According to the company, no license or prior experience is required, as a skipper will be on board for every trip. Pricing will match Click&Boat's standard rates, and all boats will meet the platform's quality standards.
Expanding Access to Europe's Coastal Gems
Christian Berces, CEO of Click&Boat, said the partnership aims to open up Europe's otherwise inaccessible islands, coves, and coastal areas to more tourists. He emphasised that the service offers greater flexibility, allowing travellers to book shorter trips without the commitment of a full-day charter or the cost of traditional excursions. The move reflects a broader shift in the travel experience economy, particularly among younger travellers seeking unique, shareable moments.
Uber is no stranger to water-based transport. In 2020, the company partnered with Thames Clippers to launch the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service in London. That river bus network serves 24 piers from Putney Pier in the west to Barking Riverside Pier in the east, with adult fares starting at £6.20 (€7.17). Passengers can hop on and off at landmarks such as Westminster, London Bridge City, and Canary Wharf, or alight at North Greenwich Pier for events at The O2 Arena.
The new Uber Boat service extends this concept to Mediterranean and Atlantic hotspots, potentially easing access to coastal destinations that are often difficult to reach by land. For travellers looking to explore Greece's lesser-known islands or other quiet summer escapes, app-based boat rentals could offer a convenient alternative to crowded ferries or expensive private charters.
While the pilot focuses on five countries, the partnership could expand to other European markets if successful. The service is designed to integrate boating into everyday mobility, as Click&Boat noted in a statement: "For the first time, boating becomes part of everyday mobility. No license needed, no experience required."
As Europe's travel sector continues to evolve, digital platforms are increasingly blurring the lines between traditional transport and leisure. Uber's foray into boat rentals underscores a growing trend toward on-demand, experience-driven travel that prioritises flexibility and ease of booking.
