Canada is rolling out a summer promotion that will make its vast network of national parks and historic sites free for all visitors, including Europeans, from 19 June to 7 September. Parks Canada, the federal agency responsible for managing these protected areas, is waiving entry fees at all national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas during that period. The move is a clear bid to attract international tourists, particularly as the United States has moved in the opposite direction with its 'America-first' pricing policy, which now charges foreign visitors an extra €85 to enter US national parks.

In addition to free entry, Parks Canada is offering a 25% discount on camping and overnight stays at its facilities. This includes a range of accommodations: from yurts and tipis to cabins and more unusual options such as a lockmaster’s house on the Rideau Canal or the prison at the Fortress of Louisbourg. The discounts apply to stays booked between June and September, making it an attractive option for European travellers planning a longer trip.

Canada’s national parks are among the most spectacular in the world, from the glacial lakes of Banff in Alberta to the tablelands of Gros Morne in Newfoundland. For European visitors, the offer represents significant savings, especially for those planning to visit multiple parks in one trip. The nearest national park to Montreal, for instance, is La Mauricie, which boasts more than 150 lakes and is home to moose, black bears, beavers, and wood turtles.

How to Get There from Europe

Air Canada, the country’s flagship carrier, operates direct flights from several European cities to Montreal and Toronto. From Montreal, travellers can fly from Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Geneva, Rome, Dublin, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Edinburgh, and Reykjavík. Toronto is connected to Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Stockholm, Paris, Prague, Vienna, and Zurich. The airline also offers routes from London to Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver.

For those looking to avoid the summer crowds, the timing of this promotion coincides with a broader trend of European destinations seeking to manage overtourism. While Canada is not a European destination, the offer is particularly relevant for European travellers who are increasingly seeking alternatives to crowded hotspots within the continent.

The Canadian initiative also comes at a time when the European Union is deepening its partnership with Canada on multiple fronts. As Canada’s Defence Minister Anita Anand recently noted, the EU-Canada relationship is a long-term strategy, not just a response to shifting US policies. That partnership extends to trade, security, and climate cooperation, areas where both sides see mutual benefit.

For European tourists, the free entry offer is a practical incentive to explore Canada’s natural heritage. But it also underscores a broader geopolitical contrast: while the US is raising barriers for foreign visitors, Canada is opening its doors. Whether this will shift travel patterns among Europeans remains to be seen, but the savings are undeniable.

Parks Canada manages over 200 sites across the country, including 47 national parks, 171 national historic sites, and five national marine conservation areas. The free entry promotion covers all of them, making it one of the most generous offers in recent years. For those planning a road trip or a camping holiday, the 25% discount on overnight stays further reduces costs.

European travellers should note that the offer applies to entry fees only; other services such as guided tours, parking, and equipment rentals are not included. However, for a family of four, the savings on entry alone could amount to several hundred euros over the course of a week-long trip.

As summer approaches, the Canadian offer is a reminder that not all travel promotions are created equal. While some destinations are raising prices, Canada is betting that accessibility will attract a new wave of visitors from across the Atlantic.
