Christmas getaways often come with a hefty price tag, but new data from travel search engine KAYAK suggests that savvy planning can keep costs down. The company's annual Christmas travel trends report, based on flight and hotel searches made between 1 April and 1 September for travel between 19 December 2026 and 9 January 2027, compared with the same period last year, reveals the most affordable destinations for travellers from France, Germany, and the UK.

Cheapest flights from France, Germany, and the UK

For French travellers, Milan offers the best value with return flights averaging €126, followed by Brussels at €153, Venice and Berlin at €161, and London at €169. Germans also find Milan the most budget-friendly, with returns at €116, while Rome (€169), Vienna (€170), Paris (€190), and London (€192) are also relatively affordable.

British travellers can snag the cheapest returns to Dublin (from £127/€151), Barcelona (£131/€155), Milan (£142/€169), and Prague or Madrid (both £143/€170). These prices reflect average fares and may vary depending on booking time and airline.

Hotel prices drop in surprising destinations

Accommodation costs are falling in several European cities, making them more attractive for Christmas trips. Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, famously home to Santa Claus, has seen a 22% drop in hotel prices, averaging €275 per night. Istanbul follows with a 12% decrease to €76 per night, while Paris is down 5% to €140. In Spain, Adeje on Tenerife is 8% cheaper at €235, and York in the UK has dropped 8% to £96 (€114) per night.

Further afield, Thailand offers significant savings: Koh Samui is down 21% to €115 per night, and Bangkok is down 20% to €76. Tokyo is 19% cheaper at €110, Singapore 13% lower at €164, and the Maldives, a bucket-list destination, has seen a 10% drop to €916 per night. In the Caribbean, Fort-de-France in Martinique is down 10% to €123.

When to book and when to fly

Timing is crucial for securing the best deals. According to Expedia data from earlier this year, the optimal booking window for international flights is generally 15–30 days before departure. For Christmas flights from Germany, prices tend to drop in December, while French travellers may need to wait until the week before Christmas to find the lowest fares. In the UK, the sweet spot is about six weeks before the big day.

As for the cheapest day to fly, KAYAK's data shows that 23 December is the most affordable for French and British travellers, while Germans should aim for 21 December. If you're staying home for Christmas but want to escape the January blues, New Year's Eve is the cheapest day to fly out across all three countries.

Hotel booking strategies

Hotel rates also follow seasonal patterns. In France, domestic accommodation is about 18% cheaper the week before Christmas compared to October, while international rates drop around 7% from late November to December. In Germany, the two weeks before Christmas offer rates 9% lower than mid-November peaks. British travellers can save 16% on international hotels and 20% on domestic ones by waiting until the fortnight before 25 December.

The cheapest check-in dates vary: for France, 21 December is best both domestically and abroad; for Germany, Christmas Day works domestically, while 21 December is best for international trips. Brits should check in on 22 December if staying in the UK, or 23 December if heading abroad.

Winter sun without the splurge

If you're dreaming of warmer climes, long-haul destinations are seeing notable price drops. From France, flights to Casablanca and Rabat in Morocco are down 19%, Agadir is 12% cheaper, Koh Samui is 17% lower, and Sri Lanka is 11% less than in 2025. Germans can reach Lima in Peru for 29% less, Cairo for 18% less, and Port Louis in Mauritius for 14% less, while Cancún and Marrakech are both down 8%.

These trends reflect broader shifts in travel demand and pricing, which can be influenced by economic factors such as wage-price pressures and energy costs. For those planning ahead, the key is to remain flexible and monitor prices closely.
