Nine individuals associated with a Czech pornography enterprise are set to face trial in Prague on charges of human trafficking, following allegations that they lured young women with false promises of modeling work before coercing them into performing in adult films. The case, which has drawn attention to the country's adult entertainment industry, centers on a project called Czech Casting, which operated between 2016 and 2019.

Prague city prosecutors have indicted the group, which includes organizers, financiers, casting producers, photographers, camera operators, and actors. If found guilty, the defendants could face prison sentences of up to 12 years, according to prosecutor's office spokesman Aleš Cimbala.

“The accused include people organising the Czech Casting project, as well as people ensuring finances, casting production and agreements,” Cimbala told reporters. He added that the indictment runs to 629 pages.

Deceptive Recruitment and Alleged Coercion

Investigators from the Czech organised crime unit (NCOZ) allege that the group placed advertisements seeking models over the age of 18, but the true nature of the work was deliberately concealed. “Detectives concluded that these offers were no more than a veil for the production and subsequent distribution of pornographic films,” the NCOZ said in a statement.

The prosecution’s case focuses on 18 women identified as victims, though authorities believe hundreds more may have been affected. According to Cimbala, the organizers allegedly applied increasing pressure during the recruitment process. “At casting, the organisers created the impression of a rush or played down the importance of the agreements signed” in order to secure the women’s consent, he explained.

The NCOZ reported that many women suffered serious psychological and health consequences after participating. “Many manifested psychological and health problems and had to seek medical aid including long-term treatment,” the unit said.

The defendants have denied the charges. According to Czech news outlet Brno Daily, the defense will argue that the women consented to the filming and had signed contracts that clearly specified the content of the videos.

Prague’s Role in the Adult Entertainment Industry

Prague has long been a hub for the adult entertainment industry. Following the Velvet Revolution in 1989, which ended communist rule in former Czechoslovakia, relaxed censorship laws and the transition to a market economy attracted pornography producers to the country. The trial highlights ongoing concerns about exploitation within this sector.

This case is not the first time the Czech Republic has grappled with human trafficking linked to the adult industry. In recent years, authorities have stepped up efforts to combat such crimes, including through cooperation with European partners. The trial also comes amid broader European discussions about trafficking, as seen in the EU's €31 billion drug strategy to combat rising deaths and trafficking.

The proceedings are expected to draw significant attention, both domestically and internationally, as they shed light on the methods used to exploit vulnerable individuals. The outcome could set a precedent for how such cases are handled in the Czech Republic and across Europe.
