As temperatures soar across the continent, from the streets of Paris to the shores of Barcelona, a familiar narrative has emerged: El Niño is back, and it is making Europe hotter. But climate scientists are pushing back against this explanation, arguing that it obscures the real culprit behind the deadly heatwave gripping much of the continent.

“El Niño is a distraction,” says Dr. Elena Rossi, a climatologist at the University of Bologna. “While it can influence global weather patterns, the intensity and frequency of heatwaves in Europe are overwhelmingly driven by long-term warming from human-caused climate change.”

Heatwave Records Tumble Across Europe

This week, France recorded its third-hottest day on record, with temperatures in parts of the Gironde region exceeding 42°C. In Spain, authorities canceled San Juan bonfires across half the country as the heatwave peaked, a move unprecedented in recent memory. The UK saw a hospital declare a critical incident as emergency services struggled to cope with heat-related illnesses.

The heatwave has also strained power grids, with several nations facing potential blackouts as demand for cooling surges. In Belgium, residents sought relief in fountains as the capital baked under a red alert.

These events are not anomalies, but part of a clear trend. Europe has warmed faster than the global average over the past three decades, and heatwaves that once occurred once a century are now expected every few years.

Why El Niño Is Not the Answer

El Niño is a natural climate pattern characterized by warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It can influence weather worldwide, including increasing the likelihood of heatwaves in some regions. However, scientists emphasize that the current heatwave in Europe is not a direct result of El Niño.

“El Niño can amplify existing warming, but it does not create heatwaves of this magnitude on its own,” explains Dr. Markus Schneider of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. “The baseline temperature has risen so much that even without El Niño, we are seeing extreme events that would have been virtually impossible without climate change.”

Indeed, a rapid attribution study by the World Weather Attribution network found that the July 2023 heatwave in Europe was made at least 2°C hotter and 10 times more likely due to climate change. The current heatwave shows similar fingerprints.

Consequences Beyond the Thermometer

The human toll is mounting. In France, 20 drownings were reported as people sought to cool off in rivers and lakes, often underestimating the risks. The heatwave has also accelerated the melting of the Bossons Glacier in the French Alps, raising concerns about long-term water supplies and glacial stability.

Travel disruptions have added to the chaos. Eurostar cut services between Paris and London as heat-related speed restrictions slowed trains, stranding thousands of passengers.

In Paris, residents flocked to the Canal Saint-Martin for relief, but the scene underscored a deeper inequality: those without air conditioning or access to green spaces are disproportionately affected. “This is a public health crisis,” says Dr. Sophie Dubois, a physician at Hôpital Saint-Louis. “The elderly, the homeless, and those with chronic conditions are at greatest risk.”

A Call for Action, Not Distraction

As the heatwave continues, experts urge policymakers to focus on mitigation and adaptation rather than attributing extreme weather to natural cycles. “Every fraction of a degree of warming matters,” says Dr. Rossi. “We cannot afford to let El Niño become an excuse for inaction.”

The European Union has set ambitious targets to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030, but critics argue that implementation lags behind rhetoric. With heatwaves becoming more frequent and severe, the pressure is on to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, improve urban planning, and strengthen healthcare systems.

For now, Europeans are left to endure the heat, but the message from scientists is clear: this is not a natural anomaly—it is a man-made crisis that demands a decisive response.
