Europe's seas are heating up at an alarming rate, and a new study confirms that climate change is the primary culprit. Researchers from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group found that human-induced warming has added roughly 2°C to Mediterranean waters this summer, with Western European seas experiencing increases of 1.3–1.4°C.
The findings paint a stark picture of the continent's marine environment. From the Atlantic off Ireland to the Mediterranean's southern shores, sea surface temperatures are surging, with severe consequences for ecosystems and coastal communities.
Climate change as the driving force
Thomas Frölicher, an environmental physicist at the University of Bern in Switzerland and co-author of the study, said: "From the Atlantic waters off Ireland to the Mediterranean Sea, Europe's seas are experiencing an alarming surge in temperatures." He added: "Our research shows clearly that this is being driven by climate change, in particular by the continued burning of fossil fuels."
The researchers combined observational data with climate model simulations to isolate the impact of human activity. Without the current 1.4°C of global warming, they estimate that only about 40% of the Bay of Biscay and Iberian coast region would have experienced marine heatwaves this year. Instead, 90% of that area and 80% of the Western Mediterranean have been affected.
The study also highlights that some Mediterranean areas recorded sea surface temperatures more than 6°C above normal during the hottest two weeks of July, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, which reported record-high ocean temperatures globally for the second consecutive month.
Ecological disruption and 'winners and losers'
The WWA warns of "severe ecological impacts" as marine species shift northwards in search of cooler waters, disrupting food chains, coastal fisheries, and aquaculture. John Bruno, a marine ecologist not involved in the study, noted that even small temperature increases can be lethal: "It's only about 1°C on coral reefs, for example."
Bruno explained that some organisms may benefit from heatwaves, either because they prefer warmer conditions or because their natural predators disappear. This leads to a "reshuffling, reorganisation of communities," with what he calls "winners and losers."
The impacts extend beyond the water. Higher sea surface temperatures increase humidity in coastal areas, raising the risk of extreme heat events on land. This is particularly concerning for densely populated coastal cities like Barcelona, Marseille, and Athens.
Claire Bergin, a co-author from Maynooth University in Ireland, acknowledged the appeal of warmer waters for beachgoers in cooler countries. "Warmer waters for swimming may sound appealing to beachgoers in cooler countries like mine," she said, but the underlying changes are far from benign.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence on the far-reaching effects of climate change on Europe's environment. As the continent grapples with droughts and extreme weather, the warming seas serve as another reminder of the urgent need to reduce emissions.
For policymakers and citizens alike, the message is clear: the allure of a warmer swim comes with a heavy ecological price tag. The findings underscore the importance of international climate commitments and the transition away from fossil fuels.
