For many travellers, a hotel is more than just a place to sleep—it can be the very reason to book a journey. That philosophy underpins Fodor's Finest 2027, a curated selection of 50 hotels worldwide that the travel publisher deems truly extraordinary. This year, 11 European properties made the cut, chosen for their impeccable service, distinctive character, and deep ties to their surroundings.

Among the European standouts are the Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como, the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo in Monaco, and the Orient Express La Minerva in Rome. The list also includes The Witchery, a 16th-century building near Edinburgh Castle, where guests can immerse themselves in Gothic-inspired interiors. Opened in 2021, Acro Suites on Crete blends luxury resort amenities with a state-of-the-art wellness retreat, offering cave suites and private plunge pools.

In London, the five-star Charlotte Street Hotel in Fitzrovia features individually designed rooms, a library, a drawing room, and a screening room for film enthusiasts. Other European entries include Airelles La Bastide in Provence, Argos in Cappadocia, Hotel Pigalle in Gothenburg, Maison Souquet in Paris, and Pulitzer Amsterdam.

What makes a hotel 'finest'?

Jeremy Tarr, Editorial Director at Fodor's Travel, explained the selection philosophy: "An extraordinary hotel stay can mean something different to every traveller. It might be a remarkable sense of place, an unexpected level of personal service, or a setting that makes you see a destination in an entirely new way." He added, "By focusing on just 50 properties this year, we're spotlighting the hotels that truly stand apart and give travellers a compelling reason to make the journey."

The list was curated by Fodor's editors in collaboration with hundreds of hospitality experts, spanning a range of price points. It includes properties with rich histories, design-driven urban retreats, and intimate hideaways. With only 50 places, Fodor's asserts that "every selection has earned its place."

For Europe specifically, Fodor's notes that the continent has been "perfecting the art of hospitality for centuries," and its portfolio of finest hotels reflects that heritage. Beyond marble lobbies and high price tags, the European curation is united by "a sense of personality." As the publisher puts it, "Whether extravagantly opulent or quietly understated, these are places with stories to tell – and plenty of reasons to become part of them."

The recognition comes amid a broader trend of travellers seeking more meaningful stays. For those planning a European getaway, the list offers inspiration—from the ice hotels of Lapland to the new Alpine lodges opening this winter. And for budget-conscious travellers, Michelin Key hotels from €130 a night prove that excellence need not break the bank.

Fodor's Finest 2027 is a reminder that Europe's hospitality scene continues to innovate while honouring tradition. Whether you prefer the opulence of Monaco or the understated charm of a Gothenburg boutique, these 11 hotels offer compelling reasons to pack your bags.
