French health authorities have confined more than 1,700 passengers and crew aboard the cruise ship Ambition in the port of Bordeaux after a suspected gastroenteritis outbreak infected approximately 50 people. The vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, arrived in the southwestern French city on Wednesday following a voyage that began in the Shetland Islands and included stops in Belfast and Liverpool.
Health Response and Precautionary Measures
The regional health agency for Nouvelle-Aquitaine stated that a medical team has been dispatched to the ship to assess the situation. Samples are being collected by the infectious disease department at Bordeaux University Hospital. As a precaution, local authorities have suspended disembarkation and limited interactions with the port, citing the contagious nature of gastroenteritis-type illnesses.
“According to information provided last night by the ship's captain, up to around 50 passengers have experienced symptoms consistent with an acute digestive infection,” the health agency said in a press release. Those affected were immediately isolated in their cabins and treated by the ship's doctor.
Initial tests have ruled out norovirus, a highly contagious form of gastroenteritis that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. However, secondary tests are still underway, and food poisoning has not been excluded as a possible cause.
Broader Context and Comparisons
French authorities have explicitly stated that there is no link between this outbreak and the hantavirus cases detected on the MV Hondius, another cruise ship that recently docked in Tenerife. “There is no reason to draw any connection between this outbreak aboard a cruise ship arriving from Belfast and Liverpool and the hantavirus cases detected on the MV Hondius,” they said.
Gastroenteritis outbreaks are relatively uncommon on cruise ships but can spread rapidly in confined environments. Vikram Niranjan, assistant professor in public health at the University of Limerick in Ireland, noted that “buffet-style dining, shared utensils, and many people touching the same surfaces can make it easier for stomach bugs to spread.” The US Vessel Sanitation Program has recorded four outbreaks in 2026 so far, two linked to norovirus and two to E. coli.
The Ambition had been scheduled to depart for Spain after its stop in Bordeaux. Passengers showed peak symptoms on Monday while the ship was docked in Brest, according to officials. The situation remains under investigation, with results from secondary tests expected to clarify the cause of the illness.
