The Israeli Community of Lisbon (CIL) has voiced strong opposition to Kanye West's upcoming concert in the Algarve, demanding that Portuguese authorities deny any public financing or use of municipal facilities for the event. In a formal request sent to the Faro and Loulé city councils, as well as to the national government, CIL argues that state support would effectively normalize antisemitic rhetoric.

The concert is set to take place on 7 August at the Algarve Stadium, a publicly owned venue. David Botelho, president of CIL, told the Portuguese news agency Lusa that he finds it "shocking" that public resources are being mobilized for an artist with a well-documented history of hate speech. "It is not only allowing a well-known anti-Semite to perform in Portugal, but also in a public facility that belongs to everyone," Botelho said.

A Pattern of Controversy

Kanye West, also known as Ye, has faced widespread backlash across Europe for his antisemitic and racist comments, which have cost him lucrative advertising contracts, endorsements, and a significant portion of his fan base. Several European countries have taken decisive action: France, Poland, and Switzerland have either postponed or canceled his concerts, while the United Kingdom has refused him a visa to enter the country. Portugal, however, remains one of the few stops on his European tour that has not been disrupted.

Botelho emphasized that the Israeli community does not seek a ban on West's entry into Portugal, though he acknowledged that such a measure could be justified. "There have been countries that have clearly said: this gentleman does not enter," he noted, adding that the community's primary concern is preventing the normalization of hate speech through public endorsement.

The CIL has yet to receive a response from the municipalities or the government. The Portuguese government has stated that it will only intervene if there is a clear risk to public order, leaving the decision largely in the hands of local authorities.

This incident is part of a broader debate across Europe about how to balance freedom of expression with the responsibility to combat hate speech. In recent months, several European nations have grappled with similar dilemmas, from overtourism controversies in Malta to the delicate diplomacy of the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan. The Kanye West concert in Portugal underscores the tension between cultural events and societal values.

As the date approaches, the Israeli community and other advocacy groups will continue to press for a clear stance from Portuguese officials. The outcome may set a precedent for how the country handles similar cases in the future.
