The long-running guessing game over who will succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond may soon be over. Producer Amy Pascal has indicated that the identity of the next 007 is likely to be revealed before the end of the year.
Speaking to Deadline during promotion for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Pascal said: “I would say the end of the year is a good bet. We are being really, really methodical. Having worked with Barbara Broccoli at the studio, I mean, Daniel Craig is a hard act to follow. And it’s got to be something really different that is stirring and exciting and different.”
Pascal is one of the producers overseeing the new Bond era, alongside David Heyman and director Denis Villeneuve, who have reportedly been conducting final auditions in August. The casting process has been shrouded in secrecy, but the producer’s comments suggest a decision is imminent.
A new chapter for the franchise
Craig’s 15-year tenure ended with No Time To Die in 2021, a film that closed his arc with a definitive farewell. Since then, the franchise has undergone a significant behind-the-scenes shift: Amazon MGM Studios acquired creative control from long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, marking a new era for the British spy series.
The change in stewardship has fuelled speculation about the direction of the character and the tone of future films. While the core elements—martinis, gadgets, and global intrigue—are expected to remain, the next Bond is likely to reflect a more contemporary sensibility.
Among the names circulating in the rumour mill are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Jack Lowden, Louis Partridge, and Tom Francis. However, as is often the case with Bond casting, the eventual choice may be someone who has not been widely tipped. The producers have a history of surprising the public, and the final decision could well go to a relatively unknown actor in his late twenties, rather than an established star.
The franchise’s European roots remain central to its identity, with locations across the continent—from London to Vienna to the Alps—having featured prominently in past films. The next Bond will likely continue that tradition, even as the production base shifts under Amazon’s ownership.
While fans wait for the official announcement, the speculation itself has become a cultural event, generating endless debate on social media and in pubs from Soho to Berlin. The producers’ methodical approach suggests they are keen to get the choice right, given the weight of expectation.
