Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has dismissed any prospect of diplomatic negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, insisting that the conflict's resolution will be determined by military action on the front lines. Speaking on Monday, Lavrov criticized an open letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed to Vladimir Putin, calling it 'rude' and accusing Kyiv of lacking interest in talks.

Lavrov specifically objected to the letter being 'circulated around the world,' claiming that 'polite people do not behave this way.' His remarks echo Putin's earlier stance that 'it is not negotiations but the actions of those involved' that will decide the outcome of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Zelenskyy's open letter, released last week, proposed direct talks between the two presidents. Putin rejected the offer during the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, stating he 'sees no point in meeting Zelenskyy.'

European Peace Initiative Dismissed

The Ukrainian president's initiative was backed by the leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In a joint statement on Sunday, President Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, alongside Zelenskyy, outlined five conditions for a 'just and lasting peace.' These included an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire and negotiations based on the current line of contact.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the European proposal on Monday, accusing the leaders of undermining their own calls for peace by continuing military support for Ukraine. 'I would like to point out that Macron, Starmer, and Merz are all trying to talk about peace. At the same time, they are emphasising their intention to assist (Ukraine) in producing new types of weapons,' Peskov said.

The European push for diplomacy comes amid ongoing battlefield dynamics. For context, Ukraine has recently intensified its drone operations, while Russian forces continue to target civilian infrastructure.

Moscow Also Slams US Mediation Role

Lavrov also criticized the United States, claiming Washington has shown no interest in returning to what Moscow describes as an 'understanding reached in Anchorage' last summer. 'I very much hope that the experience of previous failures, when the West refused to honour agreements it had itself supported, will not be repeated in relation to the Alaska agreement,' he said. 'But so far, to our great regret, our American partners have shown no interest in this.'

He expressed disappointment over comments by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who told a congressional hearing that Washington cannot act as a mediator because it supports Ukraine. 'The same was said by the well-known Kaja Kallas and a number of other figures from the European Union and the European Commission,' Lavrov added.

During the 3 June hearings, Rubio stated that the US does not see a military path to ending the conflict, arguing that only diplomatic means can stop the war—but that this is hindered by both sides' unwillingness to compromise.

Meanwhile, the EU has committed substantial financial support to Ukraine, including a €90 billion loan aimed at stabilizing the country's economy and sustaining its defense efforts.

Lavrov's latest statements underscore Moscow's hardened position, as diplomatic channels remain frozen and the war grinds on with no end in sight.
