Lebanese authorities have established a large tent camp along the Beirut seafront to accommodate civilians uprooted by Israeli airstrikes and ongoing hostilities involving Hezbollah. The displacement crisis has now surpassed one million people, according to official figures, placing immense pressure on a country already grappling with economic collapse and political paralysis.

The camp, set up on the Corniche, a popular promenade in the capital, is one of several emergency shelters being erected as the conflict escalates. Many of the displaced have fled from southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, areas that have seen intense bombardment since Israel launched its military campaign in response to Hezbollah rocket attacks.

Humanitarian Toll Mounts

The United Nations has described the situation as a humanitarian catastrophe, with hospitals overwhelmed and basic supplies running low. The Lebanese government, already weakened by years of crisis, has appealed for international aid. In a related development, a Paris concert raised funds for Lebanon's humanitarian crisis, highlighting European solidarity with the affected population.

Israel says its strikes target Hezbollah infrastructure, but the scale of civilian displacement has drawn condemnation from human rights groups. The conflict has also sparked protests across Europe, including pro-Palestinian marches in Athens after an Israeli flotilla interception.

European Union officials have called for restraint and a ceasefire. Italy has gone further, calling for EU sanctions on an Israeli minister over the treatment of flotilla activists. The bloc is also coordinating humanitarian aid deliveries to Lebanon.

The tent camp on the Corniche is a stark symbol of the crisis. Families are sheltering in rows of white tents, with limited access to water, sanitation, and medical care. Many have fled with only the clothes on their backs, leaving behind homes and livelihoods.

“We had no choice but to leave everything behind,” said one displaced woman from the southern city of Nabatieh. “The bombing was non-stop. We just want safety.”

Lebanon’s economy, already devastated by a banking collapse and the 2020 Beirut port explosion, is now facing an additional burden. The influx of displaced people is straining housing, food supplies, and public services. The World Bank has warned that the conflict could push more than half the population into poverty.

International efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far failed. The United States and France have proposed a diplomatic solution, but Hezbollah has vowed to continue its attacks until Israel ends its military operations in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israel has rejected calls for a halt, insisting on the need to neutralize the militant group.

The displacement crisis is also affecting neighboring countries. Syria, already in its own civil war, has received tens of thousands of refugees. Cyprus has reported an increase in arrivals by sea. The European Union is monitoring the situation closely, fearing a repeat of the 2015 migration crisis.

For now, the tent camp on Beirut’s seafront remains a temporary refuge for thousands. But with no end in sight to the fighting, the displaced face an uncertain future. The international community, including European nations, is being urged to step up support to prevent a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
