British police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy was found inside a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in Cambridgeshire. The incident occurred on Thursday lunchtime at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a family-run zoo, farm shop and café located roughly 32 kilometres northwest of Cambridge.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed that the toddler suffered serious injuries and is being treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where his condition is described as critical but stable. Specially trained officers are supporting the family at the hospital.

Investigation Underway

Detectives from the force's major crime unit are leading the investigation. In a statement, Detective Inspector Verity McCann said: “At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances.” She added that the arrested man and the child are not believed to be known to each other.

Police have not specified how the boy's injuries were inflicted or whether they came directly from a crocodile. The zoo, which also operates as a farm shop and café, has not issued a public statement. The enclosure houses crocodiles, but further details about the species or the exact sequence of events remain unclear.

This case comes amid broader discussions about public safety at animal attractions across Europe. While such incidents are rare, they raise questions about enclosure security and visitor supervision. The UK has seen similar tragedies in the past, such as the 2017 death of a keeper at a wildlife park in Scotland, but incidents involving members of the public are exceptional.

The arrest on suspicion of attempted murder suggests police believe the child may have been deliberately placed in danger. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have appealed for witnesses who were at the zoo at the time to come forward.

Johnsons of Old Hurst is a popular destination for families in the East of England, offering a mix of farm animals and exotic species. The zoo's website promotes it as a “small, friendly” venue, but Thursday's events have cast a shadow over its reputation.
