The Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra has opened its doors in Calvià, on Mallorca's southwestern coast, offering a new luxury option for travellers to the Balearic Islands. The 131-key resort, the brand's third property in Spain after Barcelona and Madrid, occupies the site of the former Hotel Punta Negra and aims to blend contemporary design with Mediterranean heritage.

For those planning a visit around the total solar eclipse expected over Spain in August, the hotel is offering exclusive packages. While the eclipse itself will not be visible from the hotel grounds, guests can book one of several curated experiences. A hot air balloon ride will carry just 15 people to watch the sunset eclipse as the island darkens. Alternatively, helicopter flights or private yacht charters provide other vantage points for the roughly 90-second event.

Design and Amenities

The resort's design emphasizes natural light and sea views, with many rooms and suites featuring private pools. Guests arrive via an exclusive private yacht transfer service, setting a tone of seclusion from the outset. The spa is a central feature, offering a hydromassage pool, steam room, cold plunge, and a range of treatments. Two outdoor pools and a fitness centre complete the wellness facilities.

Dining options are extensive, with six venues led by renowned chefs. Matsuhisa serves Nobu-style Japanese cuisine, while Leña by Dani García focuses on open-fire cooking. Jacinta offers Mexican dishes, Leppoc celebrates Mediterranean and Spanish Riviera flavours, and Sobretaula provides classic tapas. Poolside drinks are available at Thalos.

Mallorca itself has faced environmental challenges, including invasive snakes threatening its unique lizard species, but the island remains a top European destination. The Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra joins a growing list of notable new hotel openings across the continent, as highlighted by Afar's list of the world's best new stays for 2026.

The resort's opening underscores a broader trend in European hospitality, where luxury properties are increasingly integrating local culture and natural surroundings. For those seeking a more immersive stay, the hotel's eclipse packages offer a rare combination of celestial spectacle and high-end comfort.
