The judicial investigation into the death of Isak Andic, the founder of the fashion retailer Mango, has entered a new phase. The presiding magistrate has ordered a series of measures that include summoning a dozen witnesses and conducting a forensic reconstruction of the fatal incident that occurred on 14 December 2024 in the Montserrat mountain range near Barcelona.
Jonathan Andic, the businessman's eldest son and the only person present during the hike, remains under formal investigation on suspicion of homicide. He was released on provisional liberty after posting a one-million-euro bail set by the court.
New Witnesses and Therapy Records
Among those called to testify are the family therapist who treated several members of the Andic family, Isak Andic's daughters Sarah and Judith Andic, his partner, and Toni Ruiz, the chief executive of Mango. The judge has also requested statements from officers of the Mossos d'Esquadra Mountain Intervention Unit and hikers who encountered Jonathan Andic immediately after his father's fall.
The court order specifically seeks to locate and question one hiker who provided assistance to Jonathan Andic in the moments following the accident. These testimonies aim to reconstruct the sequence of events and the immediate aftermath of the fall.
A central element of the investigation is the content of messages exchanged between Isak Andic, Jonathan Andic, and the family therapist during a course of therapy. The prosecution contends that these communications reveal a deterioration in the father-son relationship. The defence, however, argues that the messages must be interpreted within the therapeutic context and do not indicate criminal intent.
In earlier statements to the Mossos, Sarah Andic said she had never witnessed arguments between her father and brother and rejected the notion that Jonathan had an “obsession with money.” Judith Andic acknowledged that there had been “the odd row but nothing serious” between them, according to documents in the case file.
Forensic Reconstruction and Medical Records
The judge has ordered a technical reconstruction of the fall, involving the forensic doctors who performed the autopsy, crime-scene police, and experts who inspected the site. The goal is to determine whether the injuries sustained by Isak Andic are consistent with the described manner of the fall and with physical evidence found at the scene.
Items to be examined include a watch, a jacket, traces of blood, and various marks along the Montserrat path where the accident occurred. The reconstruction will attempt to verify the mechanics of the fall and assess any discrepancies.
Additionally, the court has requested Isak Andic's complete medical, care, and pharmaceutical history. The defence argues that health issues such as osteoarthritis, which the businessman suffered from, could have contributed to an accidental fall. The prosecution believes these records may be relevant to clarifying the circumstances of his death.
The investigation remains open, and further developments are expected as the new testimonies and forensic analysis proceed. The case has drawn significant attention in Spain, given Andic's prominence as the founder of one of the country's most successful fashion brands.
