On the night of 19 June, the skies over Greater Porto were illuminated by a synchronized drone performance that earned two Guinness World Records. The show, organized by Catalan company Flock Drone Art Studio, took place at Titan beach in Matosinhos as part of the Air Invictus festival, drawing thousands of spectators.

Record-Breaking Display

The event featured 3,097 drones flying in unison, breaking the previous record of 3,050 drones for the largest phrase formed by drones. It also claimed the title of the largest drone light show in Europe. A representative from Guinness World Records was present on site to certify the achievements.

The performance paid tribute to Portugal and the city of Porto, with imagery depicting historic monuments. It was synchronized with music and light effects, creating a visual narrative that celebrated the region's heritage.

Air Invictus Festival

The drone show was the highlight of the three-day Air Invictus festival, which also included aerial displays by F-16, KC-390, and A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force. The festival featured exhibitions and workshops, attracting aviation enthusiasts and families alike.

In addition to the drone record, the festival offered a night-time aeromodelling display titled “Revenge of the 90s,” which combined light effects with music from the 1990s, painting the sky with planes, astronauts, and satellites. The event was supported by the Matosinhos municipal council.

Connection to Barcelona

Days earlier, Flock Drone Art had participated in the blessing ceremony for the Tower of Jesus at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, attended by Pope Leo XIV. That event marked the opening of the tower, a significant milestone for the iconic basilica. The drone show in Matosinhos echoed some of the themes from that ceremony, blending technology with cultural celebration.

The dual records were awarded to Flock Drone Art and Air Invictus, the organization behind the festival. The achievement highlights the growing use of drone technology for artistic and entertainment purposes across Europe.

While drone technology is often associated with military applications—such as the Russian drone barrage hitting Kyiv and Mykolaiv or the Ukrainian drone attack on a Moscow oil refinery—this event showcased its potential for peaceful, creative expression.

The success of the Matosinhos show underscores the versatility of drone swarms, which have also been used in cultural events like the Venice Biennale 2026. As drone technology evolves, its applications in art and entertainment are likely to expand, offering new ways to engage audiences across the continent.
