Morocco secured a place in the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday with a commanding 3-0 victory over co-host Canada in Houston. The Atlas Lions, ranked sixth in the FIFA world rankings, controlled the match from the second half onward, breaking a scoreless deadlock in the 50th minute.

Azzedine Ounahi opened the scoring with a right-footed strike from outside the box, converting a free kick from Achraf Hakimi. The ball threaded through a crowded penalty area and nestled into the bottom right corner, leaving Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan with no chance.

Ounahi doubled the lead in the 82nd minute, finishing from close range after a pass from Brahim Díaz. Soufiane Rahimi then capped the performance with a spectacular goal in stoppage time, sealing Morocco's second consecutive quarterfinal appearance.

Morocco's Growing Football Credentials

This marks the second straight World Cup in which Morocco has reached the last eight. In 2022, the team became the first African side ever to advance to the semifinals, a run that captivated the continent and raised expectations for the national program. Morocco's path to the round of 16 this year included a penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands, sending the Dutch to their earliest World Cup exit.

The result also carries significance for European audiences, given the large Moroccan diaspora across the continent. In cities like Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris, the team's progress has sparked celebrations and, at times, tensions. Following Morocco's earlier group-stage win, clashes erupted in several Dutch cities, highlighting the deep emotional connection between the team and communities across Europe.

Canada's Historic Run Ends

For Canada, the loss ends a memorable tournament. The co-host had won its first-ever knockout match, a 1-0 victory over South Africa, to reach the round of 16. The team was playing in only its third World Cup, and the run captured the imagination of a nation where hockey traditionally dominates the sporting landscape.

Canada had a few opportunities to get on the scoresheet. Jonathan David's free kick from outside the box in the 78th minute sailed over the crossbar, and other chances went unfinished. Despite the defeat, the team's progress represents a significant step forward for soccer in the country.

What's Next for Morocco

Morocco will face the winner of Saturday's match between Paraguay and France. The quarterfinal is scheduled for Thursday at Boston Stadium. France, the defending champions, advanced to the round of 16 after beating Belgium in group play, and a potential clash with Morocco would be a rematch of the 2022 semifinal, which France won 2-0.

Morocco's disciplined defensive structure and counterattacking efficiency have made them a difficult opponent for any side. With a blend of European-based talent and domestic stars, the team continues to defy expectations on the global stage.
