Portugal's inland freshwater swimming spots have long been a secret known mainly to locals. Now, a new free app called River Beaches is making them accessible to a wider audience, mapping more than 130 river beaches across the country.
Launched on the Apple App Store and coming soon to Google Play, the app is available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. It provides photographs, descriptions, and user-submitted tips for each location, helping visitors plan their trips and make the most of these natural pools.
Filters for Every Preference
The app includes filters that allow users to find beaches matching their preferences—whether they want spots with restaurants, parking, restrooms, lifeguards, or that are child-friendly or dog-friendly. This level of detail is particularly useful for families and travelers with specific needs.
Many of the mapped beaches are located in central Portugal's forested mountain regions, along rivers such as the Mondego, Zêzere, and Alva. These areas offer a stark contrast to the crowded coastal resorts of the Algarve, which have seen increasing pressure from tourism in recent years.
The launch comes as demand for quieter, nature-filled swimming destinations continues to rise across Europe. In a similar vein, Slovenia's Lake Bled recently topped a global ranking for cold-water swimming, highlighting the continent's growing interest in freshwater experiences.
River Beaches taps into this trend, offering an alternative to the packed beaches that often become unbearable during heatwaves. The app's team notes that 50% of its profits will be directed toward river restoration and water retention projects across Portugal, aiming to preserve the natural beauty of these spots for future generations.
While the app is free and ad-free, its commitment to environmental sustainability sets it apart from many travel tools. This focus on conservation aligns with broader European efforts to protect natural resources, such as Portugal's recent hosting of a major EU wildfire drill involving 700 personnel from six nations.
For travelers seeking a more tranquil alternative to the Mediterranean's crowded coastlines, Portugal's river beaches offer a compelling option. The app makes it easier than ever to explore these hidden gems, from the Mondego Valley to the Zêzere River basin.
As freshwater swimming continues to gain popularity, tools like River Beaches could help redistribute tourism pressure away from overvisited coastal areas, benefiting both visitors and the environment.
