Greek counter-terrorism authorities arrested a 37-year-old Palestinian national in Crete early Saturday in a joint operation by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Counter-Terrorism Directorate for Special Crimes of Violence (DAEEB). The suspect is accused of involvement with Hamas, receiving training, and planning terrorist acts on European soil.

According to local and Cypriot media, the man was allegedly plotting an attack on Israeli interests, possibly targeting a cruise ship with explosives. The arrest took place in the Agios Nikolaos area, where the suspect had been living for nearly two years and working at a hotel. He reportedly kept a low profile and was in the country legally.

Seized Materials and Chemical Bomb Plot

During searches of residences in Crete and Athens, authorities seized mobile phones, a laptop, data storage devices, bank cards, and laboratory equipment including liquid dispensers, chemical reagents, and precision scales. Public broadcaster ERT reported that the suspect had ordered certain chemicals, which he had not yet received, with the aim of constructing a chemical bomb.

Greek authorities believe the 37-year-old was in contact with individuals recently arrested in Cyprus as part of terrorism investigations. According to assessments cited by ERT, once all materials were assembled, the suspect intended to meet those arrested in Cyprus to carry out an attack on European soil. The exact location remains unknown, though Greece is among the possible sites, with an Israeli-interest target in mind.

The suspect is expected to appear before a prosecutor as the investigation continues. According to the news site Phileleftheros, the man admitted to having contacts with other individuals and participating in activities aimed at carrying out a terrorist attack on Israeli targets in a European country. However, authorities believe he was still in the preparation stage and lacked the necessary means to proceed further.

This case echoes broader security concerns across Europe. The EU has recently expanded sanctions to include Hamas Politburo members, reflecting a coordinated effort to counter militant activities. Meanwhile, pro-Palestinian protests in Athens highlight the region's complex political tensions.

The arrest in Crete underscores the ongoing vigilance of European intelligence services. The suspect's alleged plot, though not fully advanced, demonstrates the persistent threat of terrorism on the continent. Authorities continue to investigate potential links to other networks and possible targets.
